Monday Mommy Moment – Sometimes we win!

It is Mommy Moment Monday, like last week , remember…
This week’s question is

1. Tell us about one moment you felt like you were winning at this mommy thing…

Eleanor and Aidan

You know all about me already…

Winning when : I pick him up at daycare and he insists on telling everyone that I’m his mom, he has so much pride when he says, see see, My Mommy. Oh and when he told a man who was littering, in his childlike innocents, “for the bin uncle” hehehe

Cindy and Imogen

I call her my princess, she calls me Mamma, Mommy, or Mu-um depending on her mood. Imogen is 5-years old and in Grade R. I am a single Mom, trying to climb the corporate ladder while my daughter keeps my feet firmly on the ground –  staying humble and grateful for being a Mom.

Winning when: I was most impressed when she was the first in her Grade 0 class to have her name placed in the Class Kindness tree. It was a reward for an act of kindness shown by her. I am not sure what she did to deserve this position – also a First Class in my heart. At her previous daycare I was also told of how she got a chair for a helper who sat on the floor one day. Makes me hope that I have done something right.

Luchae, Kyle and Karis

Luchae blogs over at myspreadsheetbrain she has two kids with a 12 year age gap so says she feels like she is doing it all from scratch

Winning when: I feel it every time my little girl wakes up and looks SO happy to see me! She makes me feel so blessed to be a parent.

Zandile and Qawe

Zandile is the mother of a rather precocious  4-year old

Winning When: I always feel like I’m doing something when my son’s good naturedness and manners come to the fore. Like when he remembers his “please” and “thank yous” without prompt. One night a while ago, we were at the KFC on 4th Avenue, Walmer. As we parked the car, we saw a homeless man rummaging through the bins looking for any leftovers. I didn’t realise Qhawe took notice. When we came out with our 6-piece Family Treat with pops, snack burgers and zinger wings as sides, he digs into the packet and takes out a box of pop and snack burger and hands it to the man. He even donated his juice (which really takes a lot). I wanted to cry!!! But kept a massive proud smile and thanked God once again for the beauty that little guy. Another one is the extreme pride in his name, Qhawe (meaning ‘hero’). Dare you mispronounce it!!! Khawe for who and what and why?

Yolande and Sam

Displaying Us.jpgSam is an active and very loving little boy born on July 31, 2012 and his mommy is a freelance writer who works from home and who is still trying to figure out how to juggle being a semi-stay-at-home-mom and a working-mom at the same time.

Winning When: I think every time we push through a “phase” like not eating his vegetables or not wanting to go to sleep I feel like I’m winning – but this feeling usually only follows after weeks/months of “I’m failing as a mom”.

Yolande was not available last week so we get her cringe now 🙂

The other day my little one was playing with sticky tape and the next moment he came over to give me a hug, but strangely giggled as he was doing it. I went out later to go and do an interview at a school and one of the staff members pointed out that there was a large strip of tape on my bum. I immediately realised that I was “pranked” by my toddler.

I don’t usually talk about race…but

So why break my “don’t talk about race or politics especially on the blog” rule? because it affected my kid…

Usually I stay quiet because I don’t like conflict, also I don’t like racism especially the micro aggressive kind, like she’s pretty for a black girl, nice for a white girl or smart for a coloured girl type things.
I also can’t stand when people speak of all white people as privileged and racist, black people as ignorant and criminal and coloureds as gangsters and opportunistic (black when it’s good, white when it’s good) it goes on, but I shall not because I know great people from most races and bad people from most races (yes black, white, coloured are not the only)… instead I shall relay Aidan’s story.
Yesterday we visited the neighbourhood park, it’s down the road and pretty. I see preschool transport wait there for kids playing every afternoon (not sure what the deal is) anyway the kids were playing and these two little boys (black – as reference, lol) migrated towards Aidan (pale skinned coloured – further reference), only to be chastised by an older child(also black) and told to get away from the Umlungu.
I was shocked because not only isn’t Aidan an Umlungu (he is at most a Bruin Ou) but I came face to face with such young prejudice. What has this child learnt, and from who,  this child who can’t be older than 5 (she says she is 5,6,7,8,9) thinks that colours should be separated (I don’t even remember to do that in the wash).
I wasn’t sure what to do and her parents weren’t there to step in, so I just suggested they all run a race (I wasn’t trying to be punny just only thing I could think of), and they did, they ran and fell down and rolled on the grass they did it like a thousand times and Aidan was very sad to see them go…
So that’s it for my racial discussion, a lesson…be careful what you say and do in front of little ones, be weary of putting our emotions and past hurt on them, die koppies het ore (Afrikaans saying which means you don’t know who is listening, the cups have ears).
*I’m really loving Afrikaans sayings these days*

Taming the tantrum…

If I had to compare Aidan to a mythical creature I’d think pixie with all that curly hair or even vampire with that pale skin but NO, now that he is 2 he is a werewolf!
A scream at the top of his lungs, tantrum throwing annoywolf! actually
It only seems to happen when he is tired, he gets this nag in his voice, a limpness to his body and a overall rudeness to his demeanour… and it doesn’t matter where you are, if he gets tired while laying down he will still over react, it’s crazy
At some point I actually tapped him on the head yesterday (not my finest mommy moment) but it was pure frustration I tell you, Rob and I had spent a good part of the night taking him out of the restaurant to calm down. The manager even went to show him how they make ice-cream which he loved and for a brief moment we recognised our well mannered cute little kid with his pleases and thank yous, but then I made the huge mistake of  not letting him feed me the bubblegum ice-cream with a fork and he started performing –  An arms flailing, head shaking, scream performance …
and then the waiter put more menus down (for people we were waiting for) and that’s when the monkey  threw the menu on the floor…and bad mom came out and tapped his head, I honest to goodness flicked it (in lieu of throwing him down like a wwf fighter)  I felt so bad! he didn’t flinch, eventually I took him out to calm down AGAIN…
On the way home I asked him if I could “talk to him” that has become my post tantrum phrase, and he replied , No No talking mommy,  Which I take to mean he knows his behaviour was wrong…
I should have seen it coming…
At park before supper he went from this cute little “let’s all play together kid” to a South African politician telling an adorable little girl (of blonde haired blue eyed European decent) to “Just go away baba go away”
It’s getting bad this tired activated annoyance, it’s getting to the point where Rob and I look at each other the moment we realise tiredness is about to set in… Oh no the annoywolf is coming out!…
He does it while falling asleep too, screaming if he doesn’t get his way; you know if I’m being horrible and not letting him watch dvds the whole night or eat his socks (yes really) or stick his toes in my mouth or nose (I’m horrible he is practically abused)…
He did his banshie scream again last night and like the level headed adult I am I screamed too… It took the wind out of his sails and he started talking to me like a human being (hardly a long term solution though)…
He is a sweet heart again this morning, but as the moon comes over the horizon I find myself gripped in fear…  the gremlins are coming the gremlins are coming!!!
How do you guys handle the tiresome tiredness?

Open letter on your second birthday

It’s your second birthday and you are snuggled next to me as I type… it’s storming now and as you told me last night “it’s dark and raining I sleep by you” (dark a yayn,  I dudu here)
The rain is symbolic and so is the fact that I had one of the worst days ever yesterday (locked everything in house, had things break and lost a substantial amount of money to a dishonest stranger and ended up trying to pay for your party with nothing but a smile)
It reminds me that you are my rainbow … The calm after the storm…not just because of your brother but because of who you are little man and the fact that you are wise beyond your years. you saw the things I made you for your birthday and said “wow so pretty” and didnt try to take anything.
I was feeling pretty defeated and when you saw my tear stained face after a tough day you asked for a “huggy kissy”
And said “I kissy better” because that’s what I do for you.
I pray so hard that you will always have such a good heart, that you will always be willing to say sorry and eager to say thank you. That I can still get huggies and kissies for a little while longer and that you will never lose your mischievous smile…
You suprise me every day…you speak now and though your sentences are broken, the sentiment never is…you pray every night for everyone and everything and if I forget you remind me to “tank u jesus”. You are still quite sneaky and if you really don’t want to sleep you will list everything from building blocks to chocolate in your prayer.
Sometimes you infuriate me…you don’t like to eat or sleep (unless you are faking it to get out of school) and you get a little too helpful in shops filling the trollies of random strangers, also although you will tell me to “change a bum bum please” take out the nappies, wipes and powder your own bum you tell me in no uncertain terms…”No! you pee a toilet, I pee here” (points at nappy).
You are such a daddy’s boy you will ask me to “call a daddy” “bring  daddy here” if your dad is not around… you two drive me crazy with your wrestling matches and balloon saber fights over me when I’m trying to watch TV but my life is richer for it…
You have this cute/awkward habit of doing “boom” if you have a object and someone else has same:  you need to put them together and say boom…you hurled a rugby Ball at a rugby match on TV for “boom” and shoved my face into a magazine because the woman in picture reminded you of me.
That being said you are such a blessing… everyone that meets you says there is something special about you and today I just thank you for the chance to be your mom….

Happy Birthday Aidan or like you say Ahhhden

2 year development- NAILED IT! sorta, kinda

His first birthday…where did time go?

Aidan turns two on Sunday and I thought I’d check out those development charts, don’t worry anti-competition moms, I don’t intend to berate him for not matching the criteria, or trade him in…
I was just curious 🙂
The list comes from HERE

THIS MONTH…
• Can make a tower of four bricks
He can build up to 12, how do you I know this? I might have counted, I was impressed okay! sheesh – he also proceeds to throw the blocks on the floor if his tower breaks, good times 🙂 “It boken mommy, it boken now” tears …..
ʉۢ Can make two- or three-word sentences
Does Mommy, it’s boken now count? he says lots of things though that sounds like polite orders, “milkies now please”, “put a butter on”, “change my bum bum please”
 â€¢ Can walk down stairs
Yes much to my horror, up and down
â€¢ Can name a simple picture in a book
yes pretty well, well sometimes he calls every animal either a cow or a cat, oh look at the kitty (giraffe) I dunno, he calls anything that cuts like a pair of scissors, a knife, pliers, “cut scissors”
“I want a cut scissors please”… uhm no
 â€¢ Can sing simple tunes
sorta, he is great with tunes but bad with lyrics, here a cow there a cow everywhere a cow cow

Uhm not technically, he does say, “no not that one”, “no not that channel”, “I don’t a eat mummy”
• Can use 50 single words
Not so sure hey I haven’t counted, he talks non stop like his mom though so should be about 50

It’s already Ahhdin this and Ahhdin that

As a true South African this is, Now mummy not Now Now
• Half of speech is understandable
