The unfortunate link between body mass and self worth

In an episode of Big Bang Theory Sheldon asked Penny “Is your body mass somehow tied into your self worth?” The answer? sadly yes

Getting ready for a funeral on Saturday I stood in the mirror where I found myself tugging and pulling and hoping I could somehow manipulate my clothes into not making me look like a smartly dressed sausage.
I glanced over at my mom, her small frame half reflecting in my mirror, and saw the same fear in her eyes…”what will people say?” She covered up and tugged and pulled with what I can only imagine was a hope of not “offending” and getting comments about her size.

And in that moment I thought of how body shaming was practically a form of abuse which you get subjected to on either side of the scale. Unless you’re the ideal body type…(then I dunno, I only know my less than  ideal story, lol)

Weight has always been an issue with me…apart from a brief stint around 2008-2010 where I could actually go shopping and grab something off the rail, bypass the fitting room and pay for it with a “this looks about right” shrug, it’s always been a yo-yo situation around these parts.

Before my brief stint in “Averageville”  I was a real skinnymirinx, looking back at pictures I was quite lollipop head looking actually … I recall padding my bra (cringe) and wearing two pants at a time to look more curvy, meanwhile my legs in boots looked like orchids in potplants.

I got gasps of “why are you so skinny”, “do you eat”, “you look like a little boy”, “you must shop in the kiddies section”, “you bf must have pedophile tendencies;you look 12…”
It hurt!

Kinda like it hurts my chubby thigh-ed, button popping self now when people comment;
“You eat so little,I’d expect you to be skinnier”, ” joh I hardly recognised you” and my personal favourite “sheesh what happened to you, you used to be so…”

– Body shaming is not a new thing I had “two mom’s” growing up…
First there was my biological mom who I watched having to defend her small stature time and time again…Her skinniness seemed to offend people. “How could a mother of three be so tiny? It’s insane I tell you”. Random women would find a way to work her size into most conversations.

Meanwhile my “other mom” my late Godmother, fought the opposite battle, she was always on some diet ALWAYS although she was undeniably beautiful her weight issues followed her around like a bully taunting her with the phrase “you’re not good enough”… oh you got another degree, another promotion, another achievement…pity you’re a fatty.

That was years ago but the sentiment remains the same, people are still mean.
I have turned down invitations to events (sorry guys) due to feeling “too fat to function” (Mean Girls reference) and fearing what people could say. Meanwhile I know of a friend who is in great shape (she wouldn’t agree) who gets nervous when choosing clothes because of snarky comments which range from … “must be nice to be able to gym so much” to “could you dress sexier maybe”… All with the “intention” of “just kidding”

I wish people could just lay off each other…I just wish we could all just support each other (men and women) and work on being healthy and for heavens sake stop being meanies…

I’m guilty too…I’d get defensive after being called out at looking like a stick figure and would remark to a friend that so and so is one to talk with her big booty. More recently I’d think that so and so had quite a nerve to call me fat when Victoria secret wasn’t exactly knocking on their door… its not nice, I’m not proud…

These days I’m making a conscious decision to find something beautiful in everyone I see especially in myself, because quite honestly, I have the decency to think snarky things about others and keep it in my head, but with myself I use it like ammunition which no armor can fend off.
“look at you, you are disgusting”, “heels? really? you look like an elephant in stilts”, “why do you even exercise, its in your genes, you are destined to be a fatty”

Here is a collage of me over the past 8 or so years… I’ve been every size  but I’ve never been really happy… I think it’s time I stop tying my self worth into my body mass (currently I’m the size in the chair, sigh)…the buck stops here (it would help if people stopped being asshats though, just saying)

My tips for traveling with kids

We literally just got back from an over 10hour (each way) trip to CT – the first long journey with both Aidan and Caleb.
I went with my parents and siblings (Rob had to work) and I picked up a few tips for traveling with littlies…(P’S.  I hate feeling confined so long trips have never been my favourite)
– keep your snacks in a easy to reach place like a small cooler bag at your feet(if it sounds obvious you probably never had to stop the car in the middle of nowhere to rummage through your luggage for a sippy cup)
– stop frequently as having kids couped up together in car seats can make for a situation where the usually calm/mild mannered older one gets fed up with having his hair pulled and arm licked and then  grabs the little ones pacifier/dummy as revenge and throws it away (oh, just us? Never you mind)
– take doubles of toys because fighting will occur! Actually doubles don’t work because whatever the other one has is better even if you can’t tell the difference with the naked eye…The other one is better
– if someone hands your kids balloons…pop those suckers or release before the kids get attached…actually, when you see approaching balloons RUN!!! Grab a kid under each arm and make a run for it. (Unless being bopped in the head for hours with a balloon tickles your fancy or seperating balloon fights in the back seat seems like fun, in that case do you boo)
– if you have access to a big vehicle 7 seater (bless your heart) or even more than one…that’s awesome for seperating kids because – shut the heck up that’s why
– wet wipes… just yes! Lots!
– make sure your electronics are charged because hell hath no fury like a toddler who doesn’t get to see the end of his saved (did you know you could do this with YouTube clips when in wifi areas and you can watch in dataless times) videos of opening eggs end – spoiler alert it contains a crappy toy
– But most importantly try to see things from their perspective… The miles of tree lined roads are “like forests where dragons live mommy” and a lake you pass by is “like the book you read me mommy” watching the world out of the eyes of a toddler is an amazing thing… A sort of “round two” if you will.
Have an awesome day…my tired is currently tired 

Brothers from sister mothers

I have one live child, a singleton, you can read my views on his oneliness (not to be confused with loneliness) HERE.

If I have one child why then is everything I do and buy in twos? Why do I spend every night wrangling a two year old while an almost one year old tries to pull down everything within reach?

Well here is why… my sister and I seem to have ended up in some sort of time share parenting rotation.

Our boys love each other so much that separating them can be near impossible!
My sister and Aidan’s sorta-sibling live next door so after school my grade R teacher sister watches them till I come from work and “clock in”. (Giving her time to maybe eat something or take a shower-you know self indulgent things -hehe )

They want to do everything together and with the age gap it’s not always convenient (my poor heart) Think a 11 month old trying to follow a toddler down the stairs or an almost 3 year old trying to get into his old walking ring so they can race.

Caleb is a full on busy body…worse than Aidan ever was, he stops his rapid darting from room to room just long enough to dance to anything that resembles music or to beat something like a drum. He has a bit of a temper but it’s obvious that it has to do with him not being able to communicate effectively yet. So it’s a lot of pointing and screaming…Don’t worry Aidan insists that he is “learning him” to talk.

Aidan is turning out to be a smart mouth, picture a toddler version of Eric from That 70s show. He is full of snark and eye rolling and words that a two year old doesn’t quite need. He loves words though and will always ask me the meaning of words he finds interesting and also tell me which ones he can live without, like strawberry and beautiful (don’t ask). He loves making things (wonder where he gets that from) and will ask you to get out his crafts so he can make a “someing” for so and so.

 These days…
-Aidan uses Caleb to eat food he doesn’t want (you know, all non yogurt/cereal/toast meals)
-Caleb randomly hits Aidan out of frustration because “he doesn’t have words yet”
-They mess up any room in mere seconds
– They fight about everything!
-Everything needs to be purchased in twos
– They already love each other so fiercely that life is full of awwww moments see below

Curly countdown with Robyn Thomas

I’m super excited to share today’s curly countdown with you!!! Robyn Thomas from bewhole is another blogger who first attracted me with her hair – I sound so shallow #sorrynotsorry – I stumbled across her instagram feed and she became an instant hair crush.  I then read her blog and realised that she is super cool so DO CHECK HER OUT,she is all about travel, wellness and is slightly book obsessed (like most of the people closest to my heart) links at the bottom

5 random facts about you and your hair

1. I transitioned into my natural hair

I decided to gradually transition into my natural hair because I was afraid that my hair would be too short if I immediately had a big chop and I’m not too fond of super short hairstyles for myself. The transitioning period was quite stressful. When you’re transitioning, your hair is two distinct textures and it’s quite difficult to style if you’re not simply tying it into a bun. Cutting away my treated ends was such a relief and extremely liberating. I can’t believe that it’s already been two years.

2. I’m a recovering product junkie

Once I’d realised how much moisture my natural hair was craving, I bought everything in sight to hydrate it – that was a big mistake. I wasted so much money on curl creams and conditioners, and now I have a cupboard full of half-used products at home.  When you’re trying a new product you have it give it at least a month to take effect. Since my hair is more ‘coily’ and gets dry really quickly I needed something that could work quickly.

3. My hair is a mixture of type 4 A and B
I don’t place too much focus on my hair type because my natural hair has two difference textures. I have a mixture of waves, front and back tight curls and looser curls around my crown. It’s helpful to know what your hair type is so that you can further research suitable products, hair care methods and even styles, but not place placing more focus on your research than observing what your hair agrees with.

4. Youtube sensation, Naptual85 is my go-to natural hair guru
Youtube is where I find all my hair inspiration.  Sadly, in South Africa, there is very little support for women with natural hair. More and more women are going natural but I have yet to see a salon devoted to natural hair in Cape Town.

5. Regular trims
All naturals, especially women with type 4 hair, dread having our hair cut.  My hair shrinks a lot so I usually avoid having to trim for as long as possible.  I get my hair cut by stylist, fellow natural, and owner of Coiffure Ezra. I trust Ezra to cut my hair because she is not only professional, she is a natural herself.

4 products or activities you can’t live without

1. Lush American Cream Conditioner
By far the most moisture-rich conditioner I’ve come across (and there have been a lot). It’s a bit pricey (depending on how much conditioner you use) but definitely worth it.

2. Lush Curly Wurly Shampoo
My hair smells amazing when I use this product. It’s packed with chunks of coconut which acts as a bit of an exfoliator for the scalp. I love it.

3. Olive Oil
Olive oil does for my hair what coconut oil seems to be doing for everyone else. I buy extra virgin olive oil (for cooking) and use this as a moisturiser for my wash & go. I usually apply a small amount while my hair is still damp and then also have a mixture of water and olive oil in a spray bottle to lightly spritz my hair every day.

4. Protective styling with twist braids
Braids are my saving grace for when I’m having a busy month or travelling. I love getting chunky havana twist braids (aka marley braids) done because they’re not too tight or damaging to my hair. They don’t last as long as the three-strand braid but I also just think the twist suits me better than the three-strand braid.

3 Tips for other curly curls

1. Stop combing your hair
There’s no need for a comb unless it’s a wide-tooth afro comb to create volume. I always finger detangle my hair after applying conditioner. Finger detangling reduces breakage, it reduces frizz, and it promotes curl definition.

2.Get yourself a satin sleep cap
The satin Sleep Cap has been such a game-changer for me. I wear it to bed at night or even when I’m just lounging around the house with my head rested. My ‘wash and go’ lasts for four days this way – on the fourth day I usually rock an upstyle.

3. Co-wash
If you have a similar hair type to mine, you’ll appreciate the introduction to co-washing. Washing your hair with conditioner instead of shampoo. It works. I wash my hair with shampoo every second week, and co-wash in between.

2 misconceptions about curly/afro/natural hair

1. Our hair doesn’t grow quickly
My hair grows really quickly. People are always asking if I’ve cut my hair because my curls have maximum shrinkage. I haven’t done a length check in a while but my hair should be just a bit longer than shoulder length.

2. It’s low maintenance
Having natural hair doesn’t mean that your hair care routine will become low maintenance. I set aside 2 hours on the day I wash my hair, to ensure that my products are getting their full use and that my hair is treated correctly.

Tea with the queen of hearts

This weekend my aunt Desiree turned 50 and because she has the biggest heart EVER we wanted to spoil her for a change.

When she turned 45 all she asked was that instead of gifts we all pledged to give her a food parcel so she could start her dream of operating a soup kitchen…despite health issues keeping her from being able to work she does so much for the community that people were literally falling over their feet to help out at the party.

The theme for her party was “high tea” and each of the “girl cousins” hosted a table, it was so much fun to see everyone’s personality displayed through their tables (Mine is the one with the jars, because I love jars, duh)
I could not get pics of the hosts with their tables and with food  because pretty soon people were sitting down and my sister got sick so I was helping her out and you know, life… but here is a sneak preview 🙂
