Weekend recap…the year she is ending

There are a few things in my life that signal YEAR END!
Firstly it is our annual family Christmas party where all my dad’s siblings and their kids and now their kid’s kids get together and hang out for one last time before every one goes their separate ways.
Then there is the Uitenhage street carnival which as a child you waited for every year, this definitely signals; holiday’s approaching.
Also what says year end quite as loudly as schools closing.

All of the above happened this weekend and I can officially say… 2016 see you now now

My fish can not climb a tree (toddler development)

little

I want to start this post by saying I know all kids are different, their development is different and I think it’s important to focus on individual strengths. You can’t judge a fish by it’s ability to climb a tree…and such.

I also know that when it comes to our happy healthy boy we are beyond blessed. I follow pages of children who face real adversity in life and I cheer with their moms with every seemingly small achievement so I know that development is relative.

But this weekend I realised that although I see myself as pretty easy going and hippy dippy, my son’s development seems to be linked to my own pride in some way.

I love my son, he is smart and beautiful and exhaustingly energetic. We are currently working on him being a bit of a joker and no one else getting his jokes (running up to people and pretend/sometimes not pretend kicking them or hurling mud at his cousins because it’s funny) even so, he is such a loving child that most people just want to pick him up and hug him.

*Disclaimer: he is all about personal space though, so it’s best you don’t do that unless he initiates it, honestly even his parents have been told, “not so much hugs and kisses” and the phrase “I’m feeling too sad for tickles” has crossed his lips more than once.

At 2 and a half Aidan is a talker and a thinker, everything is a question and some of our most memorable times are spent just laying on the bed/grass/couch with him telling me stories full of sound effects and impromptu dramatizations.

So what’s my point?

Well recently he got a progress report from school, nothing serious and the teachers say that because he is still so young we really shouldn’t worry about it to much, it’s basically just an overview of him at school and his development.

Is he potty trained? can he brush his teeth? is he courteous? does he know his shapes and colours?…basic stuff and because I believe you only see a child’s true talents and potential later in life I don’t pay much attention to these results.

LIES!!!!!!  Aidan did bad and it hurt my feelings. According to the report his development is slow, he needs to work on everything from numbers to his name!

WHAT?!?!?! The child who introduces himself as Aidan Jesse Meyers, doesn’t know his surname? He asks other people for their full names all the time, it’s funny and unusual not inadequate

He can’t brush his teeth,  doesn’t know his colours or shapes and struggles with counting.

WHAT?!?!?! We can bribe him with teeth brushing – he loves it so much, he even flosses, he doesn’t only know shapes he dismantles them: “a heart is two circles and a triangle mommy”, “A rectangle is two squares, hey mommy”

(I’m not humble bragging about my kid here, I’m brag bragging, lol, no seriously just trying to explain why the report card took me by surprise like it did)

And this is where my pride got pinched, I suddenly found myself wondering if all Aidan’s achievements are in my head?

What if the conversations I am having with my kid are all in my mind.

Maybe him pointing out numbers and letters are just my imagination.

Does everyone else think “she should probably have him tested, he seems a little slow”

Does it even matter. Why does it matter?

Rob, my mom, Robs mom, my sister, everyone who saw the card shares my confusion , they know him as an intelligent child and were surprised that he “requires help with a few things, which they will work on next term”

We recon it is because he is shy. His class teacher says he just quietly gets on with things and they hardly know he is in class. I actually had to hold him on stage because having so many people stare at him made him extremely uncomfortable (the feeling is mutual little man).

He is so much more than that report card and although I know it actually counts for nothing as he is one of the youngest kids at school , it got me thinking about his future. I  praying that he lets more people see the light that’s inside him. Even if he is not academic or sporty, whatever he is and whoever he is I just hope he finds the strength to stand tall and let others see the real him.

More than that it got me working on myself. Reminding myself that his achievements are not my own. All I can do is help him learn and love him holistically, regardless of whether he is first in class or last. Whether he participates or sits it out. This kid is a real life little human being with his own strengths and weaknesses which have nothing to do with me.

All I can do is help him find himself and teach him and answer his millions of questions and most importantly remember THIS IS NOT ABOUT ME!

*note to his teachers, thank you for your endless patience with him and for loving him as much as you do

Foodie Fri-Dae (Nicoise Salad)

So chuffed to have Davene share more of her ridiculously delicious looking recipes with us 🙂
Last time she did a chicken and corn salad  which I tried and loved and this time around it’s a Nicoise Salad that serves four…
Ingredients:
1 can of tuna in salt water
2 thin sweet potatoes
2 tomatoes large, sliced or a cup of Italian tomatoes
½ cup of black olives
2 baby cos lettuce, leaves separated
4 hard boiled eggs
12 baby green beans, trimmed
1 avocado
4 tablespoons of olive oil
3 cups of boiling water
Seasoning ( I use Ina Paarmens Chilli and Garlic and  Green Onion Seasoning)
Method
In a medium sized pot, add the boiling water and eggs and boil that until eggs are ready.  Once ready, remove shell and slice the eggs as desired. While eggs are boiling, slice the sweet potatoes horizontally into thin slices and fry until soft in pan with 2 table spoons of olive oil. Add seasoning.  As soon as sweet potatoes are soft, remove from pan.  Clean pan thoroughly, add remaining olive oil and allow it to heat up.  Once oil is heated up, add the green beans and seasoning and saute for 5 minutes or less.  Keep moving the pan for green beans to sauté on all sides. Once ready, remove from pan.
In four separate plates, equally distribute the lettuce. Slices up the avocado thinly and distribute it equally in all four plates.  Drain the tuna from the water in the can and spoon onto all four plates equally.  Do the same with the green beans, sweet potatoes, olives, tomatoes and hardboiled eggs.  Enjoy it with a glass of refreshing home-made vitamin water, containing ice, mint, slices of strawberry and lemon.

Real Wahms of SA: Samantha and her Dimple baby

Today’s Wahm is the maker of super cute baby clothing range Dimple Baby.
I asked the beautiful Samantha Gardner how she handles a baby and a booming business from home and here is what she had to say…

Tell us about your family?
My family did not start out as the typical … first comes love, then comes marriage,  then comes the baby in the golden carriage type of  family. But rather, baby, love then marriage.  My fiance and I will be wed in April 2016 and i love my little family.

Why did you become a work from home mom?
I was unemployed, attending multiple interviews when I found out I was pregnant. Once my little boy was 3 months old,  I started searching for work again. The fashion industry didn’t seem to take kindly to me having a small child. So I decided and with the emotional backing of my now amazing fiance, I was able to fulfil my dream of owning my own kids clothing label. I was so grateful that I could be with my son and not rely on others.

What was the most unexpected part of becoming a wahm?
That feeling of not doing enough for your child. I mean, why are you at home? Because your child needs you. But so does your business. Find a balance.  I incorporate my son into my marketing, so we then share special  mommy and me time and he loves the camera.

What has been the hardest part ?
Money doesn’t grow on trees. You invest so much up front that when sales are slow, you panic. I realized that I needed to give myself and my business time. Start up businesses are not always over night successes. Believe in your product. Target the right market.

What is the most rewarding?
The most rewarding is having my son sit with me while I work and watch his face light up when he sees and feels my different fabrics. That if he cries, I can comfort him. If he’s happy or feeling sick,  I can share those moments with him.

What is your day like?
Wake up, feed baby. While he has his nap i will ensure I get dressed and ready to tackle the day. Once he wakes I usually spend time reading or playing with various toys. Or these days we practice our crawling capabilities. Once he’s fed, he will sleep in which time I get to do some work. Daddy  takes over some nights then mommy goes to gym. If not, then it’s dinner duty, bath and dress baby, feed baby and put baby to sleep.  Tuesday and Thursday are a bit different as we attend mom and baby groups together.  Great for socialising mom and baby. It does get lonely at home sometimes.

Tell us about your business
Dimple baby and kids clothing started as a dream. It soon became reality when my little baby smiled at me one day and one little dimple appeared on his beautiful face. He is my inspiration, my joy, my dimple baby. Dimple is all about functional fashion for little ones. Babies explore their new world and they like to do it as comfortably and as fashionably as possible. And well,  to make our jobs as mom’s slightly easier too. I see Dimple dressing many a fashionable baby in years to come. Dimple is designed by a mom for her baby and well,  mom’s know best.

Belinda Davids; the woman behind the tribute

Congratulations to Nicole who won the tickets to the Internationally acclaimed Whitney tribute show taking place at the Opera House this weekend!

My mom and I are excited to go!!! even more so after I got to ask the awesome performer, Belinda Davids a few questions. I mentioned in the PREVIOUS POST that PE born Belinda beat out over 15,000 other applicants to take on the challenging lead role. This time around I got to ask the beautiful mother of a teenager and a preschooler (this might be tougher role actually) what it all meant to her… here goes.

OH!!! you can follow Belinda on Instagram 🙂
her hair is EVERYTHING

Have you always been a fan of Whitney Houston?
Since the first time I heard her voice on a Teddy Pendergrass LP.
I fell in love with the purity in her voice
What made you audition?
My friend called me one morning and told me he sent out 25 emails to director of
the show and he reserved a spot for me. He convinced me to pack up my three
month old baby at the time and go and do the audition. Which I did and the rest is history.
Do you remember your first time on stage as Whitney?
I never tried to play Whitney ever before until now. I always just sang Whitney as Belinda but when this opportunity came I had to take it because that meant I could be my    idol in full. So this is my first time as Whitney.
What has been the best and the worst experience of this journey?
There has not been an bad experiences on this journey. Every experience I’ve had  has been a learning curve for me Good or bad in this journey as Whitney.

* Really hoping to see you guys at the show… Tickets are still available through
Computicket but don’t delay they are selling like banting brownies at a Tim Noakes rally (I’m so funny….oooooh brownies)

*Disclaimer: I received tickets to the show for review purposes

Three strand twist out and product review

You guys know I have a thing for big curly hair #boskop #naturalcurls #transitioning
I’ve chatted about why I love the big poufy natural look before HERE and HERE and I’m pretty sure HERE but I have never shared the products I use or tricks I’ve learnt in this hair journey (I say journey as I am not quite there yet) so I thought hey why not… people ask me in real life and then I’m like a deer in the headlights so why not do a post about it; I write better than I speak.

So here is my first ever hair care post 🙂 and review on the new all natural hair product range from www.theperfecthair.co.za

The all natural products I tried are the The Perfect Curl and The Perfect Cowash
These glass containers of goodness are available through www.theperfecthair.co.za

Whenever I try a new product step one is to do a wash and go.
I washed with the cowash and although I was nervous being myself with a glass container in the shower I found the bottle has a notch in it that ensures a good grip.
It’s a little confusing this wash. You get the feel of a hair mask all thick and puddinglike (is that a word? probably not) but your hair actually feels very clean after like you had a good wash…
AWESOME!!!
I then combed through the curling cream and at first the results were underwhelming… but after a quick defuse I liked the poufy result. I wanted a little more definition though (I’m transitioning from chemical straighteners so I have to put in a little more work) So I tried the product again but this time as a three strand twist out . . .

First step was to wash my hair with the cowash (great stuff this, for detangling too)

I then did the twist… You take a  section of hair divide it into three and do not braid, twist twist…
See below because it’s hard to explain. I do a tightish braid at the top and twist the rest.

I did that at night so to make sure it was super dry before
I loosened it I did a head wrap and rocked my twists

This head wrap is so over the top!!! love it 🙂

Results from the twist out  🙂
