Make your own play petrol pump

Wednesday is craft day!!! I made this fun little toy for Aidan’s trucks and cars and thought I’d share 🙂
A little petrol pump!

I made this simple printable myself and if you want it (without the Aidy part)
I will gladly modify and send it your way, just comment at the bottom 🙂
He had a blast
See that little man fainted at sight of the petrol prices
You will need
a box
the print out which is pretty easy to make
coloured paper
 a peg
contact plastic
a split pin (those pins with the legs)
The top of a bottle that has pump (I used a shampoo bottle)
string
cover the box in coloured paper
poke a hole on the side of the box
stick on the print out and cover the box with contact plastic
Leave the top open, it serves as a way to fill the box with something heavy ( I use a bunch of blocks) to let it stand
You can then take it out for easier storage.
poke through the hole you made in paper
put your string through
Glue on a peg (this will hold the pump nozzle)
Attach pump nozzle to string or rope or whatever
cut an arrow out of card (this is from a flap on top of the box)
Use your split pin to attach arrow
like so
almost forgot, I tied the string to a toothpick inside the box to keep it from coming out
THERE YOU GO!

Are you unintentionally body shaming kids?

Aidan is often invited to parties (maybe not so much after this post) … He is shy so we inevitably find ourselves standing off to the side so he can play near mommy, which gives me loads of people watching time.

I’ve noticed a trend which really annoys me; People commenting on children’s appearance within earshot of the child, either to the parents or referencing the parents.

It’s rude and awkward STOP IT!

“Oooh she’s a fat one hey, look at those fat thighs”, “Ooh wobbly baby”, or “Shame this one looks malnourished, so skinny! Children these days are just too skinny”.

I notice the hurt in the parents’ faces and the confusion in the child’s face and I just can’t think of one reason for adults to behave like that. Perhaps the only explanation is that they are just not thinking about it, it’s just a child, it’s just a observation.

Aidan doesn’t get many comments, he is a pretty average, under the radar sized kid… his comments are usually about his hair and that it’s a good thing he is a boy with that bush of curls, because it would be unmanageable on a girl…(uhm, they seem to forget that  I have a bush of curls and I’m a girl).

What I don’t get is WHY, why do people feel the need to dissect a kid’s appearance right in front of the kid?!

It’s hard enough as an adult when another “adult” says; “wow you have gained weight” or “wow you look sickly thin” (am I the only one who knows rude people like this?)

I imagine the effect  is way worse on a child who is still developing their sense of self.

I’m not beyond reproach, I have seen a mom loading a trolley up with junk food while a very chubby toddler holds on to her leg and I thought, that’s probably not the best idea, but it’s not my kid so I keep my mouth shut! I don’t know who that junk food is for or why the child does not conform to societies norms (shame, I don’t either), what if the kid has a health problem or the mom is a caterer, so I hush up, because I do not know their story.

Pointing out a four-year-old’s chubby thighs is not helping anyone. In fact if a child’s weight is under or over by any margin I am willing to bet that the parents are well aware and freaked out enough.

It’s not like you are doing a public service; “wow he is really big, hey”…and the parent would be like, “WHAT?! I had no idea! let me rush out and speak to a doctor , thank you for possibly saving my kid”.

And while I am on this soap box… why do people feel the need to compare kids to each other in front of them.

By all means compliment kids, I believe it’s good for them, but don’t let three little girls walk into a room and be like; “Oh well aren’t you in the pink, such a cutey” , because the one in the purple and the one in the blue can hear you and go home wondering why they are not cuties.

We need to teach kids to embrace their differences, they need to know people come in various shapes and sizes, some have long hair, some have short, some have curly hair others have straight, eye colours differ, skin colours differ, WE DIFFER and it’s okay, but I think if we want to raise kids who are not little jerks we need to be weary of being big jerks …

That’s my little rant

Get your health and fitness questions answered!

I’ve got awesome news! For the next four weeks we have someone who specialises in Biokinetics ready and willing to answer our questions 🙂

You know those health and fitness questions you were never sure who to ask like, what activity should I be careful of after an injury or how can I increase fitness within my own limitations. Damian of Damian Zealand Biokinetics promises to answer to the best of his abilities and tell you whether you would benefit from biokinetics.
Damian (who I met when he was practically a baby because I went to school with his sisters and would see him at events and play dates…) is pretty awesome, he is a nice guy who has truly found his calling.  In his twenties the father of a gorgeous little boy has gone from intern, to partner to owning his own practice in record time… I asked him a few questions so you could get to know him a little better.
What is Biokinetics?

Biokinetics is final phase rehabilitation through exercise prescription. Usually if an injury or condition exists, and the physio has finished his or her rehabilitation with the patient, the biokineticist should then take over, and start with getting the patient fully functional while still keeping the constraints and limitations (both physical and psychological) in mind. So, if a physio restores a patients’ range of motion, reduces swelling and their pain, following a knee operation, the biokineticist will then take over and strengthen to the point of full function.
Who is Damian Zealand?

Small town guy with a global and metropolitan mindset hungry for ever-changing information to better myself and my surroundings. My passion and love for my job, sports, life and most of all family and friends need to ooze out of my being on a daily basis.

How did you get into this?

Well, I applied for physiotherapy directly out of school, and didn’t get accepted. I then went with my second choice of BSc Sport science. I ‘ve gotta say that that must’ve been the best thing that God put on my path. Its the typical…If one door closes another opens.
After completing an honours in Biokinetics, I did my internship at what was Christelle Smit Biokinetics, then became her managing bio…then partner, and now owning Damian Zealand Biokinetics.

What does Damian Zealand Biokinetics specialise in?
I specialise in orthopedic rehabilitation and hydrotherapy.

What does a working day look like?

Getting up at 4.30am to start at about 6.30am (people need their daily dose of biokinetics before work) and work till 6pm. The patients will vary in conditions (Both chronic conditions and orthopedic conditions), and the type of rehab will differ (land based vs water based – hydrotherapy). So in short…literally ANY physical ailment can be seen and treated.

Other than the specialized rehab, there’s also running the business and making sure admin is up to date. So being your own boss means that you’re the HR guy, the I.T. guy, the operations manager and at times the reception!

What is the most common misconception of biokinetics?

That we’re physiotherapist or glorified personal trainers!!!

How can you help plebs like us trying to regain our fitness levels
Well, you gotta come to the practice and see for yourself! But you’re guaranteed scientific exercise programs.
( If you have any queries you think he could help with please email me at edouglasmeyers@gmail.com )

Want to dress like Gabrielle Union?

I miss this girl…the one in the picture at Sao Paulo Fashion week! I miss her love of fashion and how she would not be afraid to experiment with looks. Shame she was rather naive though and very “notice me, love me” oh and boy did she have a case of foot in mouth syndrome!!! oooooh I cringe at the thought. Sweet thing though, we are still
She started this blog and there was a strong fashion element to it back then. I miss that so decided to bring back Fashion Fridays, whoop whoop… (It always comes creeping back this Fashion Friday, like blog herpes, I’m all class I know)

So to start things off, here is my style crush everyday Gabrielle Union!!!! I decided to help you recreate the look without having to get off your bum! All shops are online, this is not a sponsored post I just love matching looks and thought you might too 🙂 (yes it’s not 100% perfect match, I phoned Gabby to get the exact matches but you know how it goes with all the being famous and having stylists and me not having her number…)

I love this look it’s casual, sophisticated and sexy all 🙂
