On liking being liked

Not everyone is going to like you & that’s okay….
I’m 30 and still trying to get my heart and head to come to agreements on that one.
I mean seriously I’m not a fb status, I really don’t need to be liked…
It’s weird that I’m not more okay with the whole thing… I was never miss popular at school and even at University I think my popularity was largely based on being friends with quite a few “hot chicks”&”cute guys”.

I often tease that I’m like sushi, you either love me or you can’t stand me, I mean most of my closest friends found me annoying at first, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say things like “you’re nicer than I thought”…apparently I’m great once you get past the first opinion (like those fireball sweets??) Im either too chirpy or too stuck up (how is that even possible? People make me sound like a mental cheerleader…. like I’m singing “everything is awesome” while holding up a “you can’t sit with us” sign)

So what’s bringing on this monologue…well I thought I was mature enough to get that some people won’t like me and it doesn’t matter blah de blah, but apparently not so much…I sure as heck don’t like everyone I meet so why should they. I also know that people are often way too busy with their day to day to care about giving offense so I shouldn’t beat them to it and take the offense …..hey luchae (she had a great post on the subject)

I realised in the last week despite my understanding of the situation, I still don’t like when people don’t like me… There was one nurse in particular this weekend who I swear was mentally rolling her eyes every time I spoke…she did the stiff smile, the glazed over look and my small talk was met with plain ignoration…I was taken aback, what did I do to her?!?
At one stage I told Aidan that the nurse would be cross because he was chewing cord of drip and asked her to just tell him not to (just a finger wag because she put it in and he was more likely to stop doing it)…her response “you’re the mother, deal with it” turns on heel and walks off…

I was so taken aback – I wasn’t asking her to parent him, just wanted him to see her agree with me – even so, I realised a part of me wanted her to like me (even though I didn’t particularly like her and overheard her tell another nurse that I was messing with her time by not holding the nebulizer correctly [despite other  nurse in question putting thing in my hand like that] also she kept insinuating that Mrs Meyers(me) gave milk outside of pre set hours, which I did not!…

I felt so confused a mixture of…”she really doesn’t figure into my everyday life so I don’t give a fig” & “what did I do to upset her, oh no! am I horrible?”

I feel like that every time someone unfollows me on Twitter,Facebook, instagram (even worse when I knew the person well) don’t get me started on feelings of inadequacies when I invite someone on fb and they don’t accept (it’s torture on my teenage soul – so much so, I wait for invites and never invite) I just always wonder what I could have done/said to upset them…I have a big thing about being the reason someone is upset, hate the thought

I no longer work for the biggest paper in the region and with that comes a lot of rejection…gone are invites and sucking up from PR people, I’m off the list and out of mind …that was to be expected though, the media world is pretty fickle, I mean I left the office I worked in for ten years with not as much as a farewell card and as a person who was always first in line with byebye gifts and cards I’ll be lying if I said I was not a little hurt.

But you know what? That doesn’t matter I’m not the invites or the messages … I’m just this girl who talks too much and who has amazing people in her life, people who have her best interests at heart at all times…and it reallllly annoys me that I care what others think

I’m much luckier than most(I’m probably gonna get a few WhatsApp messages and emails telling me to stop feeling sorry for myself on the Internet, because I have great friends like that)…I’m a good friend too (says me) yes I probably only know it’s your birthday because of fb and I don’t stay in touch nearly as much as I should but I’m the “drop everything and listen to you vent over snacks kinda friend and I’m always ready to help out so recon their pretty lucky too (hush up, you know you love me) ….

Not everyone is going to like you? And why should they! There are billion dollar industries based on things I don’t like, like coke, crocs and beer.

Eish just wish unfollow didn’t sting…but hey I’m growing! I now realise how silly I’m being… now for my heart to catch up with my head…

Tips for tots in hospital

I don’t give “parenting advice” , I don’t give advice on anything really. Opinions? Yes, (hehe) advice? No and parenting ESPECIALLY, no.

My son routinely lays down randomly ,often under things, and I suspect people would be reluctant to take advice from the mom trying to coax a toddler from under a display cabinet with a fruit stick and promises of extra teeth brushing time, (he loves it) and rightfully so… We are all just learning as we go along (except certain moms on mommy forums who know everything; their kids came with a manual I’m sure)

This being said, we are currently in hospital,  Aidy was admitted early on Saturday for observation due to chest problems and the fact that he had grown increasingly lethargic (you guys know how he gives me a run for my money so lethargic is certainly not good)

Living with passion….Pravina’s story

How brave are you really? would you throw caution into the wind and follow your heart? Pravina Chetty did, at 20 she left her family and her country and ended up teaching English, dancing and DJing all around the world…this is the inspiring story of living by the beat of her own drum…

(People like this speak to my soul, experiences over expenses and passion over possessions)

I often forget how much I have done, seen or experienced until I look back, usually at a random facebook album or when I hear a song that triggers a memory.

The first real jump was when I dropped out of university to become a DJ. As a second year student, I day dreamed constantly about decks, vinyls and house tracks. It was more than a mere obsession. It took over my soul until I eventually dropped out and ended up moving to Taiwan. The motivation at that time was to teach English for a year and save up money for decks.

I got to Taiwan and year one had it’s fair share of ups and downs, being 20 at the time and moving to the other side of the world might not have been the smartest move to some people but to me it sounded great. Independence and the freedom to work on the dream. One year turned into three amazing years of teaching English, traveling South East Asia, dancing hip hop and yes of course, I got to fulfil my dj dream.

After three years, I decided to jump again. This time I moved back home to Port Elizabeth and back in with my parents. Now anyone who has ever moved out and moved back in with their parents will understand the struggle, the constant echo of ‘how did I end up here” running through your mind. Though it was what I needed at the time, a good base while I finished my almost forgotten degree. This time I was that student who maxed out library cards at almost every library in the city. The drive to get this degree and go fix the world was so strong that staying up until 5am to write papers after I got home from work, became normal.

Fast Forward to the end of the Bachelor’s degree, my mind, heart and soul was set on traveling the world and dancing salsa. But where and how and of course, with what money! Then like magic, I ended up in Florida working as a waitress in a country club. That first six months had myself and my family wondering if I had become truly insane. About to graduate University with a degree to work as a waitress in a country club, not exactly the idea my parents had in mind for me. This worked out because after that six months, I got another job in Chicago where there was a salsa congress. My passion fueled my three years stint in the states, to basically work so that I could dance and travel. Some say madness, okay most people say madness. After a fantastic three year adventure and dancing with some of the best in the world, I did it again. In the middle of my visa process for that sort after H1 7 year visa. I decided to leave. I needed to be home for the Cape Town salsa congress. So I packed up and left. I came back to South Africa with the intention of staying for 6 months before moving to Mexico. Six months became a year and now I am on year two.

As of this moment I am on jump number …I am not sure what number anymore, but I just quit my job this month and am on a new adventure in Marketing and inspiration, with a massive passion for all things travel. If you had told me at 16 that this was the life I was going to live, I would have laughed in your face. I have learnt that I can plan my perfect life, but my plans never go as I plan them. However they seem always work out so much better than anything that I could ever imagined.

Easy peasy dry erase activity board!

I bought these awesome Mellisa and Doug crayons (Exclusive books) which you can use on a dry erase board! seriously how cool is that! there were no age appropriate learning mats in the shop at the time(that’s what the are for really), but I figured Aidan could use it with the dry erase board I bought him at Macro a while ago…he has been using it with magnets (I was scared to let him use the marker as he has already spoilt so many of his good clothes by sneaking markers) but hey crayons are different…

The size of the board was a bit of a problem for taking along (you guys know I LOOOOVE take along toys)

So I came up with this mini board using a DVD cover (we have tons of them because we tend to save our dvd’s by putting them in holders before someone uses the covers as building blocks) so I could make this with just a cover and a few printed pages…like so

What I used:

A DVD cover

Print outs: For colouring in I got Disney colouring pages off www. HappyKids.com
For the second I drew shapes using paint, those could be used with play dough as well
(make dough into shapes)
The third page is blank on one side for drawing and a gingerbread man on the other for fun decorating

 What you do

Cut pictures to size and slide in DVD holder, where cover art would go
– I have all three in there and just alternate

TA DAH!

It’s really this easy and you can easily wipe with a cloth

or use a dry erase marker
