Make your own eucalyptus rice for a stuffy chest

Scented sensory rice is wayyyy easier to make than it looks.  It’s great for little hands (just watch out for little mouths)

sensory rice

I made some eucalyptus scented rice for Aidan this weekend, the idea came to me when I was reading one of my favourite blogs Mamapapabubba where she had made sensory soup I thought that it would be awesome for my little one’s stuffy chest, but I was not in the mood for a flood-Aidan is not of the play nicely with water age…So I adapted my sensory rice recipe…. here’s the how to

Finding his happy

I have been very worried about Aidan lately, he seems to have lost his happy…My fears were confirmed when his teacher told me that recently he spends half his day beyond grumpy.
Anyone who knows Aidan knows that this is not like him at all, my little man tends to exude happiness from his every pore, he runs instead of walks, dances when he is happy and gets so excited he can’t get all his words out…

I put down the mood change to having two new cousins, he isn’t the only grandchild anymore and that’s a lot for him to take, I was pleasantly surprised that when someone joked they were going to take Caleb with them, he stepped in and said, “No, my cousin here, put down baba”
So it’s clear he is getting used to the idea…

Even so I made extra effort with him this weekend, because every now and again we all need a little extra attention.

He found a candle and wanted to “make party” I assumed he meant cake so we made play dough cupcakes with coloured rice sprinkles
Then it was Scout’s birthday…yeah! hehe
I made a makeshift fort outside and Aidan decided his whole book collection needed to come in there with him
These guys drive by on bicycles selling ice-cream, he actually asked for one and ate it!!!
We did some crafting, he wanted to build a snowman I don’t know how to build  a snowman
He was a little chesty so I made eucalyptus scented rice for him to play with .
He has ongoing chest problems so it’s nice to get a homeopathic remedy
Outside breakfast…funtimes

Frozen yogurt grape pops

Robyn has done another yummy low cal recipe for us and it is super easy to do
What you need:
Grapes
Toothpicks
Plain yogurt
Honey
How to do:
Put grapes on toothpicks
Dip grapes into yogurt
Freeze grapes
Drizzle with honey for added sweetness
(For my no sugar needs I’d use a flavoured yogurt that doesn’t require drizzling with honey)
The adorable helper (Robyn’s daughter Riley) is an added extra 🙂

Come and meet the Kennys

Allow me to introduce you to Christine from the Kenny family blog. She is an awesome resource for product reviews and her twinsikles are just too cute!!! Her blog is awesome you HAVE to check it out

-Tell us a little about your family…
I have two beautiful 17 month old twin boys that have recently started walking and are now running in all directions. I’m wife to my high-school sweetheart – the man of my dreams and also a full-time software/web developer in the financial industry. We also have two kitties, a very naughty Jack Russell and a home that is fast becoming too small.
-What do you do when not blogging?

My average day involves getting everyone ready for the day, giving lots of kisses goodbye, dashing off to work for 8 hours, and then rushing home to spend some quality time with my husband and my two little boys. Other than that I enjoy reading, lazy afternoons in the back yard and spending time with family.
-What made you decide to blog?
Having the twins, either during pregnancy or once they were born, always felt a little lonely to me. I never quite fit in with the other mommies. Looking for advice on how to raise my two little babies only got me so far and couldn’t help me with the time constraint of handling both babies, so I had to spend a lot time just figuring things out on my own. I started writing down some of my experiences in the hope that either I or someone else would one day find them useful again.
-What was your concept behind the blog?
I guess I wanted to share my story with other mommies out there, yet at the same time do something special that I might one day print and give to my children. So my blog is a little bit of both. It contains some useful advice, some not so useful advice, a lot of personal opinion and a type of album/log of my daily life with my family.
-Did you find yourself nervous at prospect of letting people into your life in this way?

I do sometimes when I realize all the personal information that I put out there could be used in bad ways. But then reading other mommy’s stories bring me so much inspiration and motivation, I can only hope to inspire another mommy out there with my story.
-Do you ever worry that your child will be like “mom why are you exposing my life?” (I worry sometimes)?
At the moment they are way too small, but I do sometimes worry what effect my blog will have on them when they are older. I plan on rebranding my site and using alias names once the kids start school.
-Does your family read your blog?

Not as much as I would like them to. J
-What do you hope to achieve through the blog?
I hope to be an inspiration to other mommies out there, whether it is by using my tips and tricks for twins or simply drawing a little happiness or motivation from our day-to-day lives.
I also want my blog to be a type of journal where I can keep a memory in both words and pictures of my experience with the twins and in the growth of our little family.
-What do you think about the blogging culture in South Africa?

Though very young and inexperienced, I think South Africa’s blogging culture is booming to life. Each genre’ has its special little groups and it would be nice to find some place where we could all connect. I love the support I’m getting from other bloggers and I truly hope its something we can keep instead of it becoming a competition.
-What do you think makes for a “good blog”
I think a good blog is all about being genuine. It doesn’t matter what you blog about as long as your message is pure, honest and genuinely you.
-How do you personally measure success in the blogging world
I guess I measure it by how many people I reach through my blog whether it be by subscribers or social media followers.

How two broke girl quotes relate to me…

I love Two Broke Girls, even though it’s a sitcom about two single 20 something women in New York , I feel like I can relate. In fact it looks like being a mom is turning me into Max (the dark haired one) from Two Broke Girls – here is how her quotes relate to my life

You need to stop freaking out because you’re not where you thought you would be, in life or in our business. It’s real life, lower your expectations. (Max to Caroline)
–       I’m learning to accept things, that picture I had before I was a mom, all of it has changed and you know what? It’s okay

You’re not my type anyway! You’re a bartender who’s close to liquor all night, and you’re not an alcoholic. So, clearly, you don’t know how to seize an opportunity. (Max to her on again off again boyfriend Johnny)
–       How I feel about people who don’t invite me to things anymore – since I’m a boring mom now

My pants kept saying “take me off” and I was like “No pants” (Telling Caroline about a romantic encounter)
–       Still trying to lose the baby (and cake and various other snacks) weight and some clothing items are a tight squeeze and want me to wear tights, and I’m like no tights are not pants even if they are just so comfy

I’m not a fan of hearing what people have to say (To her boss about customer comment cards)
–       Comments on mom forums can get a little overly heated, overly so and I’m not a fan of people losing it like that

We’re two very different kinds of idiots, but we are idiots (Max to Caroline)
–       Finding  that kindred mom, your views are different but you get each other, I have more than a few friends like that

You look so beautiful I forget how bad your personality is (said to Max)
–       That moment you stare at your sleeping angel who not too long ago was a tantrum throwing hooligan, you seem to forget all that was (sort of).

This place isn’t when Harry met Sally it’s when Harry met Salmonella (Max about the diner)
–       My husband and I feel like we are living with a very messy roommate who doesn’t even pay his share of the rent, sheesh

On life’s resume, under special skills it says, “Good at making things worse” (Max complaining)
–       Some days just suck, sick kid, malfunctioning something or other, and then you come down with something, it doesn’t rain it pours…

I think society is way too concerned with other people’s idea of what is pretty (Max defending her choice not to go to decorating class)
–       Those days when I wish going to the shop in my PJs was social acceptable, it isn’t though people, it isn’t

My interest rate in this conversation is zero (Max talking about taxes)
–       Unsolicited advice gets this reaction. Well it does in my head in real life I just smile and nod.

Learning from my little one

So my faults as a person has highlighted my victories as a parent
Two separate incidents had me thinking my that even if I’m not the best person I’m doing a pretty okay job as a mom (or my kid is just nice, who knows)
1.    At supper the other day I ordered food and so did Robin, I then got distracted by my phone as the waiter walked off. Aidan looked at him and shouted, PLEASE to which he received a huge grin, I don’t even remember if I said please…if I did it was a by-the-way, distracted kind of please and that’s not cool, even if people are paid to help you, an authentic please and thank you go a long way. He continued being cute by saying “Tanqu” (thank you) when his meal arrived asking for a “ straw please” and as we left the waiter got another thank you with a enthusiastic wave.
2.   I was having a lazy day the other day, stacking wrappers and glasses next to me instead of getting off my bum and going to the bin. Aidan saw me and said, “For the bin mummy” this made me cringe, my kid was calling me out for being lazy-oops.

Being a mom is making me a better person, I’m acutely aware that I am now exhibit in an ongoing case (his life) The way I treat people,l treat myself and the way I interact with the world are magnified in those giant light brown eyes and it makes me want to constantly improve.
