Rape, murder, abduction…and it’s not even 10am yet

I’m scared: I have spent most of my adult life working in Newspapers. From the age of 19 – that is what I have come to know. Although I always gravitated to the lighter side of news, the features and lifestyle pieces, I was always surrounded by “the nitty gritty truth”.

“Five people where just killed, grab a photographer and go” , “We need someone to talk to the survivor of a rape”, “A child was just killed, get a nice emotive picture when you speak to the parents”… Phrases like these don’t shock me (Neither does, that model looks chubby in that shot or can we get some diversity in the photo please)  Because I’ve been a photographer, a writer, a layout artist…I know it, I get it.

If #Menaretrash, what about our sons?

#Menaretrash is back at the forefront. The case of Karabo (the beautiful woman who went missing and was found to be killed and burnt beyond recognition by her boyfriend)  has basically triggered most of the nation’s women. Women are sharing their own stories on social media and you can’t scroll past a smoothie recipe without being reminded of this trash status.

So what is my feelings about it? well it’s complicated and it’s not. See I’m not the type to hijack other people’s feelings. Like when I see #Blacklivesmatter, I understand the context and don’t ever go, well actually #Alllivesmatter (because it goes without saying)  Like when people say #SavetheRhino I don’t get all emotional about the plight of the penguin, because like many people out there I can separate my feelings on different subjects.

Arguing with a 4-year-old

This past weekend I was getting some work done when my 4-year-old and I ended up in a bit of a heated debate.  I typed up as much as I could remember verbatim because, when he is older I want him to see what he put me through;

I know some of this might sound “above his years” but as the first time mother of a 4-year-old I’m not really sure what they should sound like…he mostly sounds like a mashup of the Lego song, Everything is Awesome, the My Little Pony theme song and the PJ Mask theme song. (he is always humming/singing one of them)

I have heard that he is quite a precocious 4-year-old though and you can HEAR him for real on our YouTube channel…Anyway here is what happend.
