Back to school DIY- Win a R500 Bostik school hamper

One of the sad realities of life (especially in this part of the world) is that school starts right after money ends, hehehe.
But seriously January is notorious for people trying to stretch the rand so I thought I’d share some tips to make back to school a little less stress inducing

and then Bostik was like, actually we will do you one better and give one of your readers a R500 hamper of school supplies (show-offs).

I’m really excited about the prize though, when Bostik launched their new look, complete with new mascot, Gary the Gecko, last year they send Aidy and I a few (a lots actually) of their goodies and we have been having a blast creating with it. You can see our projects on INSTAGRAM.  Their products are good quality and sturdy (sturdy is great with little boys) Now one lucky reader can win an even bigger hamper which allows you to tick off things of that blasted school list and craft at home 🙂

YEAH US!!! just follow the prompts below, this is an awesome prize so do not miss out!

Here are the top 5 school hacks I rounded up, Bostik South Africa actually has a bunch of crafts and DIYs on their site so do check it out

On feeling wanted, but not needed

I don’t always feel needed at home…

This thought came to me when I was spending a few nights in hospital with Aidan and he was humming himself to sleep while other kids would not let go of their moms.

Aidan would instruct ; “hold me for a little bit mommy” and then continue to entertain himself and argue with the nurses about the drip/IV which he feels is very much like a human phone charger.
“This thing makes me stuck, I can take medicine with my mouth I don’t need needles”
When Rob reluctantly went home (only one can stay) I didn’t have to cook his food, iron his clothes or do anything but say bye before hand. In fact the house was much cleaner after he spent the night alone there.
It’s the same when we are all home. My boys are fiercely independent. Aidan (at 2 and a half) can make lunch (cheese spread on crackers and a fruit mostly) and put tv on for himself,  he can play by himself, set up everything for his bath (minus the hot water) choose his own clothes and even successfully pack a bag for an outing (bringing it to me to check … I usually have to unpack a few randoms)
I’ve mentioned before that Rob cooks at home, he also irons, does the dishes and can go grocery shopping with just a few helpful hints from me (step away from the carbs your wife is allergic to carbs…that sorta thing) – (this makes me sound lazy, I do  can do these things too just for clarification, hehe)
Their self sufficient attitudes make me feel like they can go on merrily without me. Everyone will be clothed and fed and entertained (thank you technology for that part)
I know that if I died tomorrow they would be fine without me and that to be honest they could survive without me now already.
I know this when it’s a Friday evening and I am crafting in my little studio, Rob is playing Xbox and Aidan is playing in his room stopping ever so often  to sneak a snack out of the kitchen and to make sure we are still around.
DESPITE the knowledge that I’m not really “NEEDED” by them I have a strong sense of joy knowing that instead I am “WANTED” by them.
I know that although Rob can cook a three course meal by himself, he wants me to be in kitchen with him giving my opinions and making side dishes he deems too green but eats anyway.
I know that he is happiest on his own playing games or reading a crime novel, but wants me close by so he can catch my eye every so often and “check if I am alright”.
I know that Aidan is a brave lil bugger who doesn’t easily back down but still wants me to  hold his hand when he gets scared.
He can play by himself but I know he prefers it if I play with him and that I can get him to stop in mid tantrum if I promise to do a craft with him.
He can also prepare a snack but wants me to stand there and see him “do it self”.
I know I’m wanted when the two of them loiter in my craft room when I’m working on a project sheepishly asking when I can come hang out with them.
I know I’m wanted when they leave me for some “me time” and phone me every 30min to check in.
I know I’m wanted when I try to read and they come rough-house at my feet so I don’t feel left out. (For the love of literature let me be left out)
When they get sick and tell me so every few minutes (men hehe) I know I’m wanted.
I know I’m wanted when there are three couches in the tv room and floor pillows in the next room but they both have to sit on the bed/couch practically ontop of me because a foot in your ear is better than sitting alone.
I know in wanted because even in my most unflattering clothes and moodiest of moods they look at me like some super hero princess and make me feel special.
So although I don’t always feel needed I ALWAYS feel wanted and in some ways that’s even better.

– how does your family make you feel wanted

Why Penny made me cry

This weekends #pennysparrow drama has me heart broken…
I know many black people don’t feel like coloured people share their pain. Fair enough.
I have only been coloured so only really know my own story.
The story of knowing people look at our little boys like mini gangsters in training and that comments like “she’s coloured but bright” has been used to describe me way more than it should.
Penny Sparrow’s words hit me hard this weekend.  I remember growing up, every year end my dad would round up people who would ordinarily never have access to the beach and organise a bus to take them on a day out (also how my parents met but that’s another story)
It was around 1995, I was 9ish and playing on the beach with my brother who was 5ish at the time.
Playing with our “big Christmas gift” a set of “walkie talkies” he wandered into the path of two white ladies coming out of the Kings beach toilets, I grabbed his sandy hands and smiled as a way of apology.
The one woman pulled her bag close and looked at the two kids with curly hair matted from the sea water and sun tans begging for after sun lotion and said in exaspirated Afrikaans… “I guess we better get used to these monkeys everywhere” and it broke me!
I bundled up my brother and wanted to go home but instead hid away while the other kids played, so I wouldn’t spoil their fun.
Up till that point I never thought of myself as less than.
I grew up and went to school in a coloured area but never saw any race as different to me (mostly due to my family and to all the Christian camps I attended)… I knew we looked different but that’s the case at every family function anyway so it didn’t effect how I saw people.
That day I hated what I looked like I felt unworthy and it took me quite a while to trust again. After that a little part of me hated older white women who would ask to touch my hair and would clap and point me out to their friends because I was just so smart and spoke so beautifully…
I don’t hate anymore. I understand how people are victims of their circumstances and I usually just feel sorry for racist people and their shallow little minds.
But Penny Sparrow’s comments hurt me… I could just imagine kids hearing it!!! Their outing spoilt because people like Penny see them as unworthy.
I hate littering but I’m very sure I’ve seen many a place be littered and many a race do the littering.
The point is too many people say shiz without thinking.
Like can you hear yourself?!?
Do you realise your skin is an accident of fate? You could easily have been anyone else and then you Penny (and people like you) would have to explain to your crying child why that auntie is calling him and his loved ones monkeys (cute and playful my foot) think about that over your store bought latte on route to yoga which sorry to say all of us can do now too. (Not me so much cause I’m unfit but loads of us darker ppl do)
My problem is that I’m naive I think of a world where we are all just PEOPLE and that seems feasible to me… I hate when I stand corrected on this point 🙁

My favourite kids book for the year!

We havea favourite Christmas book!!! Not counting the bible, hehe

So you guys know I love kidsbookclub right?
Because I love to read (Two books a month for Aidan and two magazines for me) and also I don’t like spending loads of money (This is just R145 a month).
WELL This Christmas Kidsbookclub outdid themselves with the Christmas Stencils book Aidan received. (I checked online and it’s valued at R157 – double bargain)

If little hands struggle with taking stickers off…
Removing the backing sheet off stickers helps A LOT

Replacing your ice-cubes with Frozen grapes keeps your drink cool
without diluting it

No need for scrubbing to get labels off bottles
Just soak them in warm (hot even) soapy water and they glide off
– I learnt this WAYYY too late in life

Punching holes in material makes for a great “sewing” activity

A easy make ahead breakfast:
Freeze peppers, bacon, mushrooms and spinach in containers ahead of time
When ready for breakfast, defrost in microwave, season, break an egg over and microwave again for a minute (depending on how you like your eggs)

To make coloured coconut just pop some in a zip lock baggy with a few drops of food colouring (little by little to avoid clumps… and mix like Aidan does in this video… repeating “mix mix, roll roll” is optional 🙂

The truth behind my #2015bestnine

I did a looking back post yesterday 🙂 and then noticed Instagram was doing some looking back of its own with the #2015bestnine posts, basically showing your most popular pics for the year – You can find yours here by the way – I checked out mine and decided to share the stories behind my #bestnine so here goes

insta

I took this to show off my purple hair and new haircut. I have
grown to dislike that haircut (scissor remorse is real) and would
have liked more purple, less red, BUT I like the curl on this

All the selfies on my instagram page are to show off my hair
I am doing the natural hair thing and get pretty chuffed with myself
when I get it right. This is one of my first twist outs 🙂
it lasted like two hours – I have since got better

Another hair selfie, this was just a wash and go, also I look angry
I’m not angry, I just wanted a pic of my hair but didn’t have a
front facing camera… hahahaha

I want to add more products to the Oh!BoyKids range so tried
my hand at a large floor pillow and LOVED the results 🙂
Aidan didn’t want to pose for me but he is never too lazy to read so
I tricked him into “reading” and I snapped pic

The natural hair journey calls for quick thinking on bad hair days
This is one of the most daring head wraps I have ever tried, ever
The pictures are taken in a fast food place, because I have no shame
(Actually it was raining and we were basically only people there – also, no shame)

On Aidan’s second birthday I looked back on the amazing journey he has been through
I can still remember them telling me he needs to stay in NICU (where his brother died)
It was one of the scariest moments of my life and looking at him now you would never believe that

I love this Father’s day pic, I made these tops for Aidan and Robin and they loved it
There is something so adorable when it comes to the love these two have for each other
Rob hates being photographed though so all his pics on my instagram look like he is being all
Pensive and looking into the distance, truth is; I have to steal pics

This picture is hideous, hahahahaha… Why did you people like it up so much? huh huh
We had a blast though, a dirty, exhausting, blast

This is a rare sighting of me with my hair blow dried!!!
The real point of the pic was to show off my false lashes though
I even have lipgloss on… One day I shall be a real girl I promise, hahaha
My cousin took this when we took kids for dessert at Spur
I’m having tea… reminds me of that saying about healthy food at fast food places being like hugs from hookers …. you know you know

Thanks so much for looking back with me, Please check out my INSTAGRAM account here, That is where my quick tips, hair pics and daily blog reminders go
