Are you smart enough to parent a toddler?

I don’t think I am…
Since Aidan started talking , I don’t think my general knowledge has ever been tested this much in my life,  not in my inter-school quiz and debate years, not on game nights not even on my matric question paper!

Aidan is basically a question generator… like they could probably use him for a game show or for creating an app (I know I’m not the only mom who feels this way about her pre-preschooler)

– Mommy, what are flowers for?
– Why is there only rain sometimes?
– What sound does a penguin make?
– What is a ducks favourite food?
–  What is a dogs favourite colour?
–  What is the moons real name?
– Why don’t babies have words
– Why are some things big and some things small
– how do ants remember where they live
(This was just yesterday!)

I want to give him a proper answer so sometimes I ask him to give me a second to think about it(or Google it)….but because he is only two I need to walk a thin line between education and being ridiculous with flow charts and info graphics trying to explain the theory of relativity to a not yet potty trained two year old…

– flowers are pretty to attract bees and the bees help make more flowers
– we have to wait for the sun to  fill the clouds with water and when clouds get full the water comes out as rain
– it makes a sound almost like a donkey braying (so says google)
–  not bread (As popular culture would have us believe) but fish, snails, worms, crustaceans, grasses, weeds, aquatic plants, small amphibians, insects, seeds, fruits and nuts (totally Googled this)
– it is believed that dogs only see blue, yellow and grey
– moon is the official name
– you learn words as you get older (oh boy do you ever)
– everyone and everything is different because the world is like a puzzle and being different makes us all fit together (a lil deep for a 2 year old but hey)
– ants you say? Here watch the Ants movie (not scientific but it bought me a little time until . . .) ….
These ants walk and talk like people, are they people ants? I guess. Why don’t the ants wear clothes? Because only people wear clothes. People ants should wear clothes, this one is a boy right mommy? Yes he is. If he is a boy where is his penis, his penis should be in his pants but he has no clothes on. It’s a cartoon Aidan. Hey uncle ant where is your penis? Can I call him penis mommy? Oh where is penis going?  Penis ran away…BED TIME BED TIME! Do ants sleep in beds? I think people ants sleep in beds, do they put on pajamas at night but no clothes in the day. . . . . .

Oh how I wish I was kidding…

washi tape glass magnet DIY

If you are stuck for a cute gift idea, this is definitely a go to
It’s cheap, easy and looks so pretty. I made mine with double sided tape and two weeks later it’s still on the fridge BUT if you want to make sure of durability I suggest replacing the double sided tape with modge podge.

What you need

– Glass stones from the garden or craft section of most stores – these are Mr Price Home

– Washi tape (this is a great way to use up those last pieces of tape)
– Double sided tape or modge podge
– Glue
– Magnets
– Exacto knife
– paper

What you do

Stick down a piece of washi tape onto your paper
Cut the paper, and place double sided tape on the picture side
You can skip the double sided tape and modge podge the picture onto the glass stone
If you double sided taped it on now is the time to trim off excess
If you modge podge you would want to trim before glueing
Now just glue on a magnet… and leave to dry
You should be left with pretty magnets like this…
They are much prettier in real life, the flash from my camera just seems to refract badly

Awesome news guys! well for me anyway – hehe
Mandy from Pregnant in Cape Town is now also Mandy from Tums2Tots Online because she bought the online magazine – as one does – and is granting me another little piece of the internet.
In case the blog, twitter, instagram, pinterest and facebook aren’t enough – perhaps I didn’t get enough attention as a child, haha
Any who I have partnered up with Tums2Tots for a fun new column called Crafting Corner with Ella and I am super excited to share more DIYs with you guys over there…

So far I have shared how to make a Plush Christmas Tree, which you can easily decorate with stickers, or leave blank as part of your room decor

I also made some quick and easy Cloud Dough which is seriouslyawesome and lasts quite a long time.

I have loads more ideas so do WATCH THIS SPACE!!! and comment with any DIY Ideas you might have

Burn out in January? Really!?

I’m not sure why, but I have not arrived in the new year yet.
Well I’m here but so tired and close to climbing under the table and rocking back and forth that I might as well have stayed in 2015
I think the problem is escalated by the fact that Rob (the husband person) is not in 2016 either.

Reasons I can’t make the transition:

–   We worked right through the holidays so there was no restart button pushed

–    We didn’t get the year end bonus thing so there was no year end splurge, gift to self or fancy trip to make you feel like…aaahhhh reward for a year’s hard work

–     The cleaning lady is still on leave and even though we have miraculously kept the house tidy, the extra cleaning during the December period has added to exhaustion

–     Washing has piled up, which is likely to happen when you take on extra shifts to make ends meet and use the little time you have at home to pass out/watch your son play/both. The piled up washing makes you feel like your house is never actually clean also totally running out of things to wear.

–    Going into a new year with hospitalised child doesn’t exactly make you feel amped and ready for a new year

–   Tight finances and people not paying me for orders means Oh!Boy has not officially “started” for the new year

–  Struggling with health issues (mostly the most uncomfortable eyes ever) but having to wait for Drs appointment at the end of the week

– Struggling with blog inspiration and blogging guilt

–  Wanting to start some sort of health and fitness program but time and money are not on my side

Basically everything is in limbo… nothing can just get a move on already!
It all makes me very lazy to do anything but watch stand up comedy on Netflix while half heartedly catching up on the online classes I’ve missed.

I want to have a get up and go but no such luck!

I am just so tired all the time! Is it the heat? (It’s stupid hot by the way) The messy house? (Come back cleaning lady, Aidan is at school again…it’s better now) The financial tightrope (Trying to remember I chose this, I chose to spend this year and last working extra hard and putting all extra money into debts so our dream of a house can come closer) Is it my health (why are my eyes so sore darn it? Also is this a medical or an optometry problem?)
I seriously need a restart button right about now!

How did you restart? Any advice on dealing with burn out when most people haven’t even lit the candle yet?
