Barley salad is awesome! Who knew?

I certainly had no idea barley could be used for anything but hearty soups (Def not the next Masterchef over here) my friend brought me some salad to try and it got me thinking… This has to be pretty doable – not only doable, improvable (She bought it as a take away so there was no recipe)

The next day I made a big pot of the stuff
(Kinda like rice – instructions on the pack) figured since it can keep in fridge for a week I had time to experiment…

What I used:
Barley
Feta
Cucumber
Little cherry tomatoes
Corriander Pesto (not pictured as it was a last minute brain wave)

What I did:
Layered ingredients (to my taste) in a carry along container and shook up and decanted at work…

I love love love
-It’s got a creamy almost pasta like texture and is low gi for my insulin issues
-yesterday I was running late ans only had with pesto and feta and it might have even been yummiest 🙂

DIY office space – can’t wait!

Being well aware of the currently political state and praying everyday for a resolution while looking into ways to educate and assist…I am just not emotionally ready to talk about how people’s priorities are all screwed up so instead I will focus on the good and show you a few ideas for my new office:

Bleach printing (learn from my mistakes)

For Aidan’s birthday we went for a Mickey Mouse theme or tried to,  you remember the CHAOS?
I really wanted to make him something unique and when I could not find any Mickey tops in his size (which he didn’t have already) I took it as my cue to craft 🙂 – who am I kidding, waking up is a cue to craft…
These T-shirts were on the sale rack at MrPrice which is obviously a sign to try bleach printing… (also I only have pink glitter fabric paint and wasn’t too sure of that)

They are not perfect but I like them 🙂  These were my first tries ever so I’m pretty sure the next ones will be even better… Aidan wears the black one with orange shorts as pj’s now
I used:
bleach (will go for thick one next time and not work on a once beautiful table cloth)
Scissors
A decal
contact paper
t-shirt
cotton buds
Make a stencil with contact paper and cut out – you might want to print this and not wing it, I’m a winger…
Stick newspaper inside the T-shirt so bleach does not go right through
Dip cotton buds in bleach and make dots around where you stuck down stencil
_ I wanted to have a Heavy rock Mickey feel (because I like to be different) so I added a few random drops for that disheveled look (also my cotton bud control is not as awesome as I thought, but lets go with disheveled look story)
would probably go for a more precise finish in the future, but it worked

My little rock star on his birthday 🙂

To recap, this is a great craft with endless possibilities but BE CAREFUL, bleach is unforgiving and FAST acting so have your plan ahead of time…

Does my baby need the doctor?

It’s definitely sick baby season, Aidan is snotty and uncomfortable and some of my friend’s kids are really not dealing with the change of weather too well (feel better soon babas)

I got this very valuable advice from Sr Teresa Hayward a private Registered midwife, specialising in Neonatal Intensive Care  and had to share…

You can get hold of her FACEBOOK or WEBSITE

ADVICE: WHAT TO LOOK FOR AND DECIDE IF YOU NEED TO TAKE BABY TO THE DR:
I often hear from moms how they feel the Drs think they are paranoid. I also know as a mom myself how difficult it is to get an appointment with a Dr. Here are some things to look at and decide whether you can need to take them to a Dr

1. has baby got a temperature – anything above 37.8 is a fever. Babies under 6wks must be seen before giving anything, babies under 6months must be seen but you can give something 1st, if temp comes down, then you can wait till morning, if it doesn’t then go straight away. Remember any temp higher than 38.3 is not related to teething or vaccinations.
2. Feeding – if baby is not feeding or is taking in less than half the normal daily volume then they should be see. Please don’t go to Dr with breastfeeding problems, that is why there are lactation consultants. They will generally just say put on formula
3. Is your baby having wet nappies – how many, colour of urine, blood in nappy (girls under 6wks can have bloody discharge). Remember babies can also get urinary tract infections. Babies urine should not be orange and should not smell strongly.
4. Vomiting – if they are vomiting large amounts after consecutive feeds and if vomit green
5. Is your baby unusually drowsy
6. Does baby appear floppy and focusing visually
7. Is your baby having difficulty breathing – wheezing on out breathes, flaring nostrils, rattly cough, runny nose that is yellow or green
8. Circulation problems or blue nails
9. Diarrhoea
10. Dehydration – this usually goes with no drinking, lethargic, no wees, vomiting and diarrhoea
There are a number of things that a clinic nurse can assist you with and save you a lot of money:
– thrush
– nappy rash
– feeding problems – eg breastfeeding and formula and introduction to solids
– colic and reflux
– constipation
– teething
If you go to Dr:
– be able to tell him the symptoms you are concerned about and what you have seen
– what was last temp
– what meds have you given, when and how much
– how long has baby been sick
– normal meds eg teething, colic, reflux (these can influence what he prescribes)
– other medical conditions eg reflux, colic, asthma etc
– allergies
– when last did baby eat, wee and poo/vomit
Be careful of changing Dr too. Every time you go to a different dr it can affect babies treatment as they don’t know history.

Join us for some yoga…

So a while back I did a story for the paper on this really cool yoga studio (among other things they teach yoga to kids for increased concentration, self control and a host of other things) The woman I interviewed really struck a cord with me – I’m weird like that – some people I just know instinctively are good souls and I usually end up cyber stalking until they become my friend or run away… any who I had a brilliant idea… why not have her do a few guest posts, I used to do yoga and LOVED it and with all the changes in my life I definitely need something to keep me focused (apart from prayer – church girl over here)…
so join me in welcoming Michelle from feelgoodyoga OVER HERE she will be sharing her knowledge over the next couple of weeks…
Allow the beautiful mom of two to introduce herself and join us over the next few Saturdays for some enlightenment 🙂

From Michelle:

What is the hype about?…
Finally, yoga has made its mark in our community and Yoga got a strong leg up on the world stage when Prime Minister Narendra Modi from India, called for observing an International Yoga Day, describing the ancient science as “India’s gift to the world.”

Modi’s unexpected reference to yoga in his UN General Assembly speech came when he was talking about climate change and going back to basics. “Yoga is not just about fitness or exercise, it is about changing one’s lifestyle”. And that is exactly what it does.
I stumbled upon yoga when I was studying my Media Studies Diploma. My creativity of advertising lecturer gave us a 101 day assignment focused on being taken out of your comfort zone and trying something new. Yoga is what I chose to do and that is when the magic took place, the swish of an idea turned into a mind altering wonderland.
At that time of my life, I was suffering from depression. After the 101 days of doing yoga, I was one step closer to combating the illness. 13 years later, I now own my own yoga studio, work for a nationwide successful advertising company and there is never a dull moment or thought that enters my mind. I thank my yoga journey for that and am so excited to share all that I have learnt through those years with each and every one of you.

 Here we go…
