What I’ve been up to…in pictures

If you follow me on INSTAGRAM you probably saw these pictures before…but if you didn’t here is what I have been up to since our last “picture check in” . . . Also the truth behind the happy snaps

My aunt and uncle renewed their vows after 25 years…They are still crazy in love after all these years and I only pray that my own marriage can stand the test of time like this…. Oh and Aidan was the ring bearer and in true Aidan style decided it was nap time not photo time…

I was photographer, but don’t judge by these pictures as Instgram lowers quality, and my son is not about the photo taking… here are some pictures I took. . . HERE

LOVE his face in this picture, Aidan through and through…It’s very “what you talking about Willis”
Also don’t you just LOVE his shoes? later that day he snuck them into his sandpit to use as shovels…so ja that

I had the week off so spent loads of time with Aidan: we  played with play dough… He loves the stuff says “I pay dough mama” and fetches his play dough in his room- he needs to be supervised though because he will grind it into your carpet when you are not looking….

We painted some wrapping paper for his dad’s Christmas gift… The next day he brings his paint to me to open (surprising already because I put it all away in it’s storage bag in his cupboard) I told him it was not painting time, but when I went to put paint back I find that he had set up a little “paint station” he had taken out bowls, brushes and  paper and only needed the paint open…. I was both impressed and freaked out at this.

We built a fort… Aidan calls it a blanky house . . .

We took out Aidan’s “Big Christmas Gift” early because with no day care for a couple of weeks he needs something to burn off some energy, HE LOVES IT!

Taylor received her design from PRETTI YOU she LOVED IT.

Her mom and I meanwhile loved Rob’s lasagna and my sangria

I made these carb free 60cal date balls….
Stick 250g dates, 100g almonds and 100g raisins in a blender till finely chopped and sticky, shape balls and stick in fridge to “set” perfect guilt free “something sweet”

Thanking the mean girls

Sunday evening vent: I like to think of myself as an evolved being. Someone able to forgive and move on and someone who despite a “rocky” start in life has dealt quite well and is very happy with what she surrounds herself with. Why then do pictures of people who hurt me years ago still upset me?
Facebook has this thing where people you’re not friends with appear on your timeline all the time because you are friends of their friends…do you know what annoys me about this?
The fact that I now get to see just how great people I don’t care for are doing. People I didn’t invite/accept on fb quite on purpose…
In high school I was not very popular…
(Guess this quirky thing was not quite as mainstream back then) I didnt have what they had, or dress like they dressed, or maybe I spoke too much, or wasn’t pretty enough.
Whatever it was it caused me to get teased, pranked and perhaps worst of all ignored. I can’t tell you how many times I went to bed with a heavy heart because practically the whole class, including my closest friends were invited to parties, but I wasn’t.
I was part of quite a few extramural activities so I got to be treated badly at an erray of events…yeah me
Don’t get me wrong I didn’t eat all my lunches in the bathroom stalls..I had great friends who “got me” and who I will always be thankful for (you know who you are) but given the choice I would never in a million years go back to school (even if it meant getting my figure back – I’m that serious)… I guess my point here is that the saying. .. “sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is utter crap!
Their words and sometimes lack of words hurt … and on some vulnerable nights like tonight when I’m feeling just a little bit sorry for myself and annoyed that the meanies clearly didn’t get their come up ens, I can’t help but think a scar from a stick or a stone would have healed by now….(instead of filling me with self doubt)
Funny thing is these “mean girls” might have never thought they were being mean, one of them could even read this right now and wonder who did this to me and think I must be imagining things because I always seemed so happy and upbeat (didn’t get drama award for nothing).
Always the optimist I like to think that they actually did me a favour (Whether they own it or not)…
They helped me appreciate the people in my life and let me take other people’s feelings into consideration…and I for one think I’m a pretty “nice person” who knows what it is like to be an outsider and because of this I will always go out of my way to remind every kid I know that there is nothing wrong with being “different” nothing at all…

So to all my fellow square pegs out there stop trying to fit into round holes…We are awesome just the way we are:)
And fb has both block and ignore options now for those vulnerable nights 🙂

Passing Nadine’s open windows

On Thursdays I like to feature interesting people and today’s featured “mom who blogs” Nadine Rose Larter (Passing The Open Windows) is nothing if not interesting. She is a homeschooling mom and awesome author (featured her first book a while ago HERE) with such an unique look at life that I actually look forward to her fb statuses.  She really is such a special soul and has agreed to have us pry into her life a little…

-Tell us a little about your family…

Well, we’re a family of five. I have one son and my husband has a son and a daughter. We all live together in one messy chaotic and often infuriating house.

-What do you do when not blogging?

Goodness. I think I’m mostly “not blogging”. I home school the three kids so I’m usually moaning at them to do their work. Otherwise I do a small bit of freelance writing and I try to work on a lot of fiction writing as well.

-What made you decide to blog?

I started blogging in 2009. I just wanted to write stuff. I started by blogging the first couple of chapters of my book, Coffee at Little Angels, and then kind of just meandered into blogging about whatever I felt like relatively quickly.

-What was your concept behind the blog?

Well back then it was supposed to be blog about me writing my novel. Now there isn’t much of a concept. It’s just another way to procrastinate instead of working on actual novels.

– Where does blog name come from?

It’s a John Irving reference from my favourite book, The Hotel New Hampshire. It basically means don’t commit suicide.

-Did you find yourself nervous at prospect of letting people into your life in this way?

No. I don’t. I’m not sure why I don’t. I suppose most people would. I like an open and honest dialogue though. I like being able to say what is on my mind. I like asking questions and discussing answers. Every now and then I get a nasty response but it’s not enough to shut me up.

-Do you ever worry that your child will be like “mom why are you exposing my life?” (I worry sometimes)?

Again, no. I don’t write much about my life as a parent or stepparent to be honest. I think if I had to delve in to that more then maybe I would start to worry. I write mostly about myself and what I’m thinking. A little narcissistic I guess. But that is my right. I hope my child will grow up to respect that. I hope he will grow up appreciating that I am a person too. Not just a mom.

-Does your family read your blog?

I think they do sometimes, but not always.

-What do you hope to achieve through the blog?

A little bit of sanity perhaps. Maybe some clarity. Sometimes I don’t always know how I feel about something until I write about it. So that helps. Putting yourself out there and being honest (and vulnerable) can be a great thing. I like to think that it might somehow help when it comes to finding like-minded people to spend more time with.

-What do you think about the blogging culture in South Africa?

I honestly have no opinion. Ok maybe I do have an opinion: I think that we have a lot to talk about and I think we could do it in a civilised way but instead we all act like idiots. Sure, there are a ton of mom blogs out there and they’re all cute and sweet and everyone’s offering a pat on the head and some gentle encouragement – great. But I sometimes wish we could be more real about stuff. I have yet to come across anything that made me feel like it might be bordering on progressive. I like to think something like that exists and that I just haven’t found it yet.

-What do you think makes for a “good blog”

I think writing what you want to write and being honest about it goes a long way in any world. I’m the wrong person to ask though. I’m not exactly trendy or with it!

-How do you personally measure success in the blogging world

I don’t measure it. I’m just doing what I do for me. My “success” is my own.

Super easy stocking fillers

If you are like me and prefer making things as stocking fillers instead of venturing into the world of December shopping mayhem, you will love the following DIYs they take like NO time and provide tons of fun for the little ones… I should know as my little one discovered his before I got a chance to stick it in his stocking and he has been loving it:

Minion Lacing Toy
and Velcro Sticks

LACING TOY:
What you need:
– Laminated picture (This was one half of a birthday card…waste not want not)
– Rope of Shoe lace (I started craft with rope but found shoelace worked waaay better)
– Paper Punch
What you do:
– Punch holes around picture
– Yes you are done now… give to child to lace around the picture
VELCRO STICKS
…Aidan LOVES these and calls it his sticky stickies
What you need:
– Popsicle sticks
– Velcro
– glue (used wood glue but next time I’m using a glue gun)
What you do:
– Cut Velcro into little blocks (You get pre-cut, but the roll was R5 a metre so I went with that)
– Stick the fluffy side on one side of the stick and the sticky side on the other (very technical terms I know)
– Turn stick around and do the same… so one end of the stick has two fluffy pieces and other end has two sticky pieces
– You are done
– Store in one of the bags you made using THIS tutorial

Six years today…

Six years ago when we decided to get married we had a lot of sceptics and I don’t blame them… It was a rather fast transition from swearing off men for good to announcing my pending nuptials to a soldier many of my friends had not even met yet… (13 months from friends to newlywed’s) but something just felt right like it was always meant to be.
I’m glad I followed my heart when  it came to this, with my late grans words ringing in my ear, “love comes unexpectedly, but you will know”
We have been through so much over the years; unemployment, long distance marriage and even child loss, but at the end of it all we have each other and for that I’m grateful 🙂
