Blue eye tutorial (Guest Post)

Ranique shows how to add a pop of colour to your make-up routine without looking like an extra from a Drag Show 🙂

In a world that’s dull and grey…
Colour! Colour and more colour is the one thing that will always stay!

So this week we’re playing with some eye-pop-make-up!
I love colour and and luckily for me, for the Summer of 2014, colour shadow and liners are one of your SIX HOTTEST Summer 2014 beauty trends in the make-up world… So you might want to toss away that dull colour shadow palette and pop over to the bright side of life…

Now I know it could be overwhelming doing your own make-up and playing with colour, I mean the last thing you want is for people to stare and think
“Oh my… she must have woken up in the 80s this morning …”

Noooo that’s not what I mean with colour …

Here i played with 3 make-up items!
Yes 3!
A eyeliner AVON
A trio shadow RALO
A mascara ESSENCE

With a few easy steps you can look fabulous this coming Summer.

Step 1:
Prep Brow and Lid

Step 2:
Outline with black eyeliner

Step 3:
Apply 1st green shadow over half the lid

Step 4:
Apply 2nd green shadow and blend towards the inner corner of your eye

Step 5:
Use your index finger to apply and blend the blue shadow over the center of the lid

Step 6:
Define the lower lash with liner

A closer look…

There you have it!

3 items!
1 fabulous Summer 2014 look!

Until next week!

Learning from life while mourning

So my friend died today and I was angry! Angry at a stupid reckless driver who caused this, angry that her husband lost his wife, her brother lost a sister, nephew lost an aunt, parents lost a child. . .
We met in 2010 when she won a title sponsored by the paper I was working for. Over the years I’ve done many articles on her and her various charitable endeavours.  She impressed me with her giant heart and awesome attitude and we became friends.
She was young not nearly done with life… married for only 8 months she still had so many plans…
My heart goes out to her family who I know she loved more than anything…We spoke at nauseum about how lucky we both were to love and be loved…now she’s gone and I can’t imagine the gaping hole she has left with them. How their hearts must ache as they try to put things in perspective. Her parents were her heroes and she shared everything with them…what now?
Everyone who knew her adored her. A rare mix of beauty, brains and soooo much compassion.
I wasn’t done being her friend…still so many cups of coffee we promised to chat over, so much more I could learn from her.
I was just so angry, angry at God even. .. how could he take someone so fundimentaly good and leave murderers and rapists merrily living their lives…how could he let prayers go unanswered in this way!
Her accident two days ago brought out so much love…messages from far and wide and the blood bank could hardly handle all donations that came in for her…her influence shook the city to its core.
How can she simply be dead?!? How could God let her be dead?!?

I had to check myself and think of things from a less selfish place (like there is such a place in death)
Bianca wouldn’t want me angry at God. She loved him to much for that (she was a Christian in the true “follow by example” sense) So i try to see the “good” ; she gets to go home and one day we will be reunited with her…

It’s hard not to be broken by this…can’t imagine how those closer to her must feel…but I rest (and hope others do to) in the knowledge that she LIVED she never did anything in half measures this girl…let this be a lesson to us all, life is short make sure you LIVE it

Omw B can’t believe you’re gone 🙁
Much love my friend

And from conversations with her I know enough to say this: to her mom (you were her best friend) dad (you were her hero) husband (she loved you from the depths of her soul) brother (you inspired her) nephew (you brought so much joy) she shared so much about you all, know that you were loved with all she had and that everyone she touched holds you close in this tough time

Movember: Not just about the stash…

Movember is the month dedicated to testicular cancer awareness – we take a look at what testicular cancer is all about, how it can potentially affect fertility in males and the various options available to men who have won the battle against this disease.

What is testicular cancer?
•    A type of cancer that occurs in men’s testicles
•    Young men are most at risk
•    Early diagnosis can save your life.

Even though testicular cancer is not very common, it is a serious concern for young men. It is the most common cancer among men aged 20–34. But if testicular cancer is found and treated early, it is usually curable, but the question is – how does testicular cancer and it’s treatment affect your ability to father a child?

Intensive chemotherapy treatments may lengthen the process, but many testicular cancer survivors have fathered children naturally. Most men with testicular cancer who were fertile prior to being diagnosed are able to father children after treatment. The biggest risk to fertility is chemotherapy but research shows thatapproximately 7 out of 10 (70%) are able to father children.
Other factors:
If your treatment for testicular cancer does cause permanent infertility, you will no longer be able to father a child. This can be very hard to accept if you were hoping to have children. You and your partner should discuss this possibility with your doctor before you start treatment. You should be offered the opportunity of sperm banking before starting treatment if you are concerned about your future fertility.
Sometimes the lymph glands in your abdomen need to be surgically removed , especially if they are still enlarged after radiotherapy or chemotherapy. This can affect your fertility because the operation can cause retrograde ejaculation. New techniques in surgery are helping to reduce this problem.
Although this surgery may mean you cannot father a child, it has no physical effect on your ability to have an erection or an orgasm.
Chemotherapycan cause temporary infertility in most men with testicular cancer. In some men, fertility may not recover, particularly in those who have had very high doses of chemotherapy. Talk to your doctor if you are worried about whether chemotherapy will affect your fertility. You can have tests to see if your fertility has gone back to normal and your doctor can discuss this with you and your partner while advising you regarding a fertility supplement such as Prelox® to encourage normal and improved sperm production.
The multiple benefits of Prelox® include:
•  Increase in the anti oxidative capacity of plasma.
•  Stimulates the activity of e-NOS (endothelial nitric oxide synthetase).
•  In combination with L-Arginine (Prelox®) increases e-NOS in spermatozoa.
•  An increase in spermatozoa NO (Nitric Oxide) increases sperm motility and human sperm capacitance.
Some men with testicular cancer have a low sperm count prior to treatment. In these men successful treatment with chemotherapy can result in  their sperm count returning to a more normal level.
Your doctor may offer you the opportunity to save some semen before treatment begins. If your sperm is suitable and you want to store some for the future, you need to give 2 or 3 semen samples over a period of a few days at a fertility clinic. The samples are frozen and stored by the hospital until you are 55. If you and your partner want to have a child in the future, the samples are thawed and used in conduction with fertility treatment.
Counselling for your and your partner may be offered at the fertility clinic before you have sperm banking. You will also need to sign a consent form that states how you want your sperm to be used. You will have blood tests to check for any illnesses or infections, such as HIV or hepatitis.
If the cancer has spread and you need to start your chemotherapy right away due to life threatening concerns, your doctor may advise against sperm banking because it may  delay the start of your cancer treatment.
You may be able to benefit from sperm banking even if your sperm count is low. It is quite common for men with testicular cancer to have a low sperm count.. When you want to use the sperm, the sample is thawed and the surviving sperm are used to fertilise your partner’s egg. In order to improve your sperm count prior to sperm banking, talk to your doctor about a a fertility supplement such as Prelox® which can increase your sperm count and improve the quality of your sperm sample.
The fertilised egg is then implanted in the womb to grow naturally. This is the same as the test tube baby technique. Doctors can’t guarantee that it will work for you. Some sperm die when the sample is thawed. And the test tube technique doesn’t always work first time, thus it is important to have the highest quality sperm sample that you can manage.

Thanking teachers at the end of the year

The year is rapidly drawing to a close… This is the first time Aidan has been “at school” not surprisingly as he is only 19months old, hehe. His educare teachers have been so amazing with him and we have gone from tears as you walk away to a wave goodbye.
They embrace his individuality and have all the patience in the world with him.  Having grown up with a lot of teachers in my life – I’m pretty sure I know even more now – I know that it can be a thankless job so I thought it might be fun to give them a little something to say that we recognize their hard work and appreciate it…  Here are some ideas I found on the interweb… click on the picture for link….

This one is so cute but a little tricky if you don’t know the teachers dietary requirements.
Don’t want to be the one who poisoned the teacher with the nut allergy…oops

This is great if you have more than one teacher to thank, ALSO I can’t resist a pun

I would opt to put a class picture in this, with the date…because an individual photo would put unnecessary stress on the teacher “Teacher why is only Aidan in your frame, where is my picture”

Because you cant go wrong with stationery…and I love puns

Both these containers made from pencils/crayons can brighten anyone’s desk and they are so simple to make

You can’t go wrong with a little handbag essential like this…

I have not included what I will be gifting, simply because I haven’t put it together yet  and it would be kinda awkward if they read it here, hehe 🙂

Do you give teacher appreciation gifts? What is your go to?

Grieving parents: when your “Now” gets sick your “Then” haunts

Logan on left, and “Born of Fire” meaning of Aidan’s name on right
Having a sick baby is not uncommon. Especially if the “sickness” is flu, upset tummy, and so forth. This is the norm and as emotional as having a sick child is, it’s one of those things we know we have to deal with and we just do. Because we are moms and that’s like on page one of the job description.

Why then did I find myself clutching an overheating toddler while fighting back tears at the emergency room of our local hospital just a night ago?
Why did it feel like my heart was being ripped out and that I was punched so hard in the stomach I could hardly breath…
Why did I want everyone to shut up and stop talking sense and in fact just wake me up when it was all over.

I realised that it wasn’t just about Aidan, it was largely about Logan…
This hospital where I was holding my son while waiting my turn is where I came looking for help with Logan and this is where I had to leave him behind.
The fear and nausea inducing sadness was not coming from my head, but my heart. I had somehow convinced myself of ridiculous unfounded things and making myself sick…

In my head;
I was here to bring Aidan to the hospital and again return home empty handed.
I would have to pack up his clothes and toys and give everything away…I would have to endure the pain, the heartbreak and the stigma all over again.
My life would yet again come to a stand still and this time around I wasn’t so sure if I could start it up again, or if I would want to.

Naturally I was getting ahead of myself. Aidan simply had a fever brought on by flu. He was happily chatting away and being very brave and cooperative with the tests. I was the one “not well”.
He was praised for being a good patient and one of the sweetest toddlers they had seen. He was his usual busy self so why was I a basket case?

It’s the first time Aidan has been back to the hospital he was born at, the hospital he spent the first days of his life learning to breath at (I wasn’t sure he would ever come home) and the hospital his brother stopped breathing at 🙁
This place has so many memories , good and bad, and I guess taking him there  was just another plaster that needed to be ripped off.

I forget how damaged I still am, how my heart isn’t completely whole yet…but it’s a journey this grieving thing and even though I get a flat tyre or run out of petrol every now and again, the journey goes on 🙂

So Aidan touched a snake, met a dragon and gave a dino a dental check-up

So this weekend we visited BAYWORLD in Port Elizabeth as part of Kirsten’s birthday celebrations…she had a Dora the Explorer theme so her mom took her and her cousins (which includes Aidan) on an “adventure” to the BayWorld where she could “find Nemo” at the aquarium, “travel back in time” at the museum and “touch a real live snake” at the snake park.
Then we had a picnic at Happy Valley  where the kids could find their favourite cartoon characters while taking a walk… and they even had time to build sand castles. The kids LOVED it! happy birthday again little one 🙂

– On a less fun note, Aidan got sick last night, we couldn’t get his fever down and he refused to be out of my arms for a second. We took him to the emergency room (better safe than sorry) and this being his first time in the emergency room, and with our history I was very close to tears. But he proceeded to be a cute bubbly happy little kid. The nurse even said he was one of the best behaved little ones, letting them do tests while he just merrily investigated all around him. He even said the word Doctor to our surprise and thanked the nurses while waving bye. He is much better today, thank goodness 🙂

Our little brainiac, I know you shouldn’t label kids but this one is a smarty pants, not a label, an observation…you know Kirsten the vocal one year old from this post
She wouldn’t let anyone eat her face, hahaha. Reminds me of a story a friend told me that once at a party someone had a 3d Barney cake and when the mom cut into it the birthday child cried rivers because mom stabbed Barney
Aidan and my brother who he LOVES
Look who is all brave and holding a snake
I love the silliness that is this picture 🙂
Aidan might be a dentist one day, only thing he seemed to care about at dinosaur display was the teeth…Here he is showing his teeth with his dad
Aidan was the first one out of everyone to touch the snake…could be what spurred everyone on to do the same
More big teeth
What would an outing be without Aidan randomly laying down
My sister, Anthea, with a snake and family in background
Allister getting up close and personal with the snake
Aidan was sooooo excited to see the minions at Happy Valley
My little sand crab, this child and sand, I will never get it, he carries sand in his pockets people just because
Picnic time
Aidan’s favourite at the moment, Toothless from “How to train your dragon”
Also known as teethies in our house…told you he has a slight teeth obsession
