Tell us a little about your family…
My immediate family consists of 5… my husband Kurt and I, our daughter Alyssa and our 2 four-legged companions Tony and Trevor. Kurt and I will be married for 6 years in October, the time has literally just flown by and 19 months ago, Alyssa was welcomed into the world. Our lives have certainly changed once Alyssa arrived but we are enjoying every minute of it.
What do you do when not blogging?
I have a full-time job which occupies most of my week but my evenings and weekends are for family QT.
What made you decide to blog?
I’ve always loved documenting things in various forms and have followed a number of blogs over the past few years. I’ve wanted to start a blog for a long while, but in 2014 I just felt that the time was right…. It was a “now or never” type of feeling.
What was your concept behind the blog?
I want to create a scrapbook of memories for our little family. I also want to document all the prettiness in my life especially that of my daughter J and hopefully share our joys with the readers.
Did you find yourself nervous at prospect of letting people into your life in this way?
Yes, I think this is the reason why I procrastinated in getting the blog going.
Do you ever worry that your child will be like “mom why are you exposing my life?”
I will never “expose” my child in any negative way but as she gets older I am sure she will have her opinion which I will definitely take into account.
Does your family read your blog?
Yes
What do you hope to achieve through the blog?
I would like to document but also inspire and share my experiences with the readers which can hopefully add some meaning in their lives. Little things we do can sometimes make a big difference in another person’s life.
What do you think about the blogging culture in South Africa?
Being new to the blogosphere, I find that there is a lot of diversity when it comes to SA Bloggers, however some are not given the recognition as well as others.
What do you think makes for a “good blog”
Relatable, original and consistent content.
How do you personally measure success in the blogging world?

I think the more engagement and interaction with readers will be an indication of the Blog’s success but from a personal point of view – creating content that you as a Blogger can be proud of is most probably the best indicator.

Sugar free recipes for kids-because childhood diabetes is real!

When a press release about childhood diabetes came into my inbox I was quite interested to read up on it. I did a stint reporting on illnesses/diseases so things like this always peaks my interest.
According to the South African Journal of Child Health, type 1 diabetes is increasing in all age groups, with a disproportionately steep increase in preschool children. The South African Diabetes Research Group estimates type 1 diabetes is growing by 3% a year in children and adolescents and by 5% a year in preschool children.

The “Simple things, like going to a birthday party, playing sports, or staying overnight with friends, all need careful planning,” says non-profit organisation, Diabetes SA. “Every day, children with diabetes may need to take insulin or oral medication. They also need to check their blood glucose several times during the day. For school-age children, these tasks can make them feel ‘different’ from their classmates.”
It has also been noted that there is a disturbing increase in type 2 diabetes; which is usually associated with an unhealthy lifestyle in older, overweight adults.

All is not lost though, as they accompanied their scary facts with a list of things you can do to combat diabetes.
Team effort
“Coping with diabetes means major lifestyle changes for children and their families,” says Canderel SA brand manager, Marcelle Pienaar. “The most effective way of managing the condition and staying healthy is for the entire family to make a team effort.”
Diabetes SA recommends creating a personal diabetes plan together with a health care provider in order to help the child follow a healthy diet, get regular exercise, check their blood glucose levels and take insulin or oral medication as prescribed.
A child diagnosed with diabetes, also needs to follow a meal plan developed by a physician or a registered dietician that is designed to keep blood glucose levels in the target range. Portion size the right amount of calories for the child’s age and ideas for healthy food choices at meal and snack times should be discussed.
Healthy alternatives
Diabetes SA recommends the following general guidelines for choosing food for diabetic children:
·         Limit fat intake
·         Include a food from each of the food groups at each meal
·         If overweight, prepare smaller portions and reduce intake of fat
·         Cut back on salt
·         Drink plenty of water
“When it comes to adapting to a diabetic-friendly diet, the key challenge is to keep meals exciting for kids while still adhering to the meal plan and retaining nutritional value,” says Pienaar, adding that the Canderel Kitchen has several exciting recipes that make healthy eating easier and more appealing to children.
“Cooking with Canderel and baking with Canderel Yellow instead of sugar will increase your range of dishes without risking your child’s health. You’ll get the same sweetness as sugar – with ten times less kilojoules,” says Pienaar.

The following recipes have been specially developed by Canderel are perfect for kids:

Tomato pasta sauce
Serves 4
386 Kilojoules per serving
Ingredients
800g tin of whole plum tomatoes
3 tbsp olive oil
2 garlic cloves, peeled and cut into slithers
1 1Ž2 tsp of sea salt
1Ž2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
Handful of fresh, chopped basil
1 tsp dried oregano
2 tbsp Canderel granules
Method
Heat one to two tablespoons of olive oil in a pan and fry the garlic until soft but not brown. Add the tomatoes, some salt and pepper and cook fiercely, stirring constantly. As they cook, the tomatoes will break up and release their juices. When this liquid has evaporated, remove from the heat. Add the remaining olive oil, basil, oregano and Canderel. Serve immediately.
Tip: If you aren’t going to serve the sauce immediately, cool it quickly and store. When you’re ready to use it, re-heat it thoroughly and only then add the Canderel.

Homemade ice cream sundae
Serves 8
Ingredients
Homemade vanilla ice cream
6 large egg yolks
500 ml fresh cream
1 vanilla pod
5 – 6 sachets Canderel Yellow
Pinch of salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
Sundae layers
16 Sugar free choc chip cookies (or vanilla)
250ml fat free milk
250ml fresh cream
1 sachet Canderel Yellow
Chocolate sauce
85g Canderel dark chocolate
1 tbsp fresh cream
1Ž2 tbsp butter
Toppings
Hazelnuts (or any other nut of your choice)
Fresh or Maraschino cherries
Method
To make the ice cream, separate the eggs, lightly beat the egg yolks in a deep bowl and set aside. Place the cream in a deep pot. Split the vanilla pod in half, scrape out the seeds and place in the cream. Add the Canderel to the mix and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat and remove the vanilla pod. Cool slightly before slowly pouring the cream mix into the beaten egg yolks, whisking constantly with an electric whisk. Strain the mix through a sieve into a freezer proof bowl. Add the vanilla extract and mix well. Place the bowl into an ice bath to cool down before covering and freezing.
Remove the ice cream from the freezer every 45 minutes and churn with an electric whisk to break up the ice crystals and make a smooth ice cream. Repeat this process until the ice cream has almost set. Freeze for another 45 minutes before serving.
To create the layers of the sundae, break the cookies into quarters and soak in the warm milk. Just before they become soft, carefully remove and set aside. Whip the cream into stiff peaks and sweeten to taste with Canderel Yellow. Refrigerate until needed.
To create the chocolate sauce, gently melt the Canderel Dark Chocolate slab over a bain-marie, adding the cream and butter once the chocolate has melted. Stir well and remove from the heat. Start the assembly of the sundae immediately.
Assembly
Take 8 tall glasses and layer the ingredients, starting with the soaked cookies in the bottom of the glasses. Add a layer of whipped cream, then another layer of cookies. Place two small scoops of ice cream on top of the cookie layer. Drizzle chocolate sauce over the ice cream and garnish with hazelnuts and cherries or your choice of topping.

Praising individuality

I’ve been reading about not “labelling” kids a lot lately and I get where the experts are coming from… Growing up my sister was always praised for her beauty and me for my brains…
So as the “pretty one” she never really thinks of herself as smart and as the “smart one” I certainly never think of myself as pretty…
But as much as I think you shouldn’t box people in, I have also come to realise that you can’t get away from labels, you just can’t….
So how about instead of sheltering Aidan from labels, I just overload him with them so one doesn’t outshine the rest…
That is kind of what I’m doing now… He is my smart boy, my cutey petudy, my lil adventurer, my busy body, my gentle soul, my tree hugger, my music lover, my entertainer….
Although some may argue that I’m giving him too much to live up to or setting him up for an identity crisis,  I just see it as loving and praising every part of him
Meanwhile I have become very weary of comparing him to others, which is difficult when you have so many friends with kids…you don’t want your kid to fall behind and you are always nervous about doing something wrong, like when Aidan was the last one in the mommy group to start walking I couldn’t help but wonder if I did something wrong, like not enough tummy time or something….
The other day Aidan and I were paging through those “First Word” books and I noticed he doesn’t point out objects and name them like other kids…I was still wondering if this was age appropriate when he did something funny.
He opened the page on food and started pointing at all round items (tomatoes, grapes, egg yolk), he picked them out one by one saying ball, ball, ball – So here I’m so worried he doesn’t say the words I almost missed him picking out the shapes…

This is why I really love this cartoon: Something to remember …No two people are the same and that is okay 🙂

Happy birthday to my other half. . .

Today is Robin’s birthday, you all know Rob by now…My husband the great cook (to my detriment) who thinks he is funny and in the words of Pink “I hate so much it must be true love”….
Love that song, here are the lyrics.

But seriously it’s Rob’s birthday and I will take this opportunity to be soppy and announce to the world that I am one lucky girl to be with someone who supports her whole heartedly and would go hungry so she doesn’t have to, someone who although he is ridiculously shy will attend events where strangers will inevitability try to strike up a conversation with him (he is not a fan) just because I HAVE to go 🙂

He was recently bumped up to Culpable Homicide detective and when I asked why on earth he would sign up for a job where you work with death everyday, he replied that someone needs to give these families peace of mind and give the case numbers names and faces… and that right there is why I love this man 🙂

Happy birthday hun, you annoy me but I wouldn’t want to live a day without you, and if I had to I know you are a great dad so Aidan would be taken care of 🙂

Happy birthday!!!

Harassing the Harassed mom for some answers :)

I love Laura’s blog, Harassed Mom there is something very relatable about it. I find myself agreeing, or just “getting it” so often, despite not having four kids or an ex husband, hehehe.
Laura has a great sense of humour and her blog is just one of those “must-follows”
Here is what she has to say about being “A mom who blogs”

-Tell us a little about your family…
We are a mixed bunch of individuals. David and I have been married for just over a year but we met over 5 years ago in a dodgy little pub in Fourways. We have four kids, two are mine and two are ours. Cameron is 12 years old and keeps us busy with his sports, Kiara is 10 and lives in her own little bubble, sometimes entering our world to do mundane things like go to school, Jack is 3 and currently rules the house, despite our best attempts at telling him he is only 3 and cannot tell us what to do and Emma is 6 months old, she is, despite being the fourth child, rather demanding and likes to spend her days being carried around. David works in aviation insurance and I work from home, when Emma allows.

-What do you do when not blogging?
I am creating content, which is pretty easy when you have four kids. I also do work from home as a freelance writer in the mornings and the afternoons are pretty much spent driving kids around.
-What made you decide to blog?
My friend Jeanette suggested I start a blog just after I left my ex-husband. It actually started out as a photo challenge blog but quickly turned into a journal of my experience getting divorced and being a single mom.
-What was your concept behind the two blogs?
Harassedmom is just that – a blog about being an harassedmom. I honestly never really thought much about why I wanted to blog or what I was going to blog about long term. It has sort of evolved on its own as my life has changed.
My aim BlogShareConnect is to create a blog about blogging and connecting. I would ultimately like to create a resource for bloggers to guide them through the minefield that is blogging, dealing with brands, press releases etc as well as a platform to organise regular get-togethers.
-Did you find yourself nervous at prospect of letting people into your life in this way?
No I can honestly say I never did. I am by nature an over sharer so it wasn’t something I have ever really worried about or even considered.
-Do you ever worry that your kids will be like “mom why are you exposing my life?”
My kids know I blog and they know that I share stuff about them – neither of the older ones have (as yet) asked me to not say stuff or remove stuff BUT I am more cautious when I share stuff about the older two now and try to share MY experience of the situation as opposed to theirs. If there comes a time where they do ask me to remove stuff I will.
-Does your family read your blog? Yes.
-What do you hope to achieve through the blog?
This is a hard one to answer because I have only recently started thinking about this. I think if I have to think of something it would be to let people know they aren’t alone by sharing the challenges and joys of parenting honestly. So often when we are going through a rough patch with our kids, we think we are messing up, we feel alone and a little hopeless but the reality is that everyone is going through or has gone through the same thing.
-What do you think about the blogging culture in South Africa?
It is too divided. I am not sure how it happened or even why but there are such distinct lines which make it a challenge, I do hope this changes though.
-What do you think makes for a “good blog”?
Honesty and regular original content
-How do you personally measure success in the blogging world?
I don’t. The easy answer would be the number of comments, hits or impressions or what not but I don’t think that’s where it lies. I think it lies in creating a space that you feel proud of.
