Curly countdown with Ashleigh

Today’s curly countdown comes courtesy of someone I met through her hair…
Allow me to elaborate – Ashleigh is a virtual assistant who blogs over at Dalasini  she was being interviewed on mental health on a site I stumbled across and although the article really struck a cord with me due to my own battles with mental health all I could think was DAT HAIR DOE! (because I think like a 16 year old rapper) But seriously I loved her hair and immediately followed her on all her social media channels because I’m a legit stalker 🙂

Ashleigh has been kind enough to do a curly countdown post (in here witty Ashleigh style) for us so here goes 🙂

5 random facts about you and your hair

– I’m an entrepreneur. I work from home {which is not always cool because in most families this translates as “She can do all the cooking and cleaning because she is home”. One day I told my gran I couldn’t do what she asked me to at the time because I was working. Her response, “What work?”}  In other news, if you need a virtual assistant to take some tasks off your hands, please get in touch.

– I must be doing something wrong because my hair is breaking a lot around the front. Resulting in lots of fly-aways or frizzies across my forehead. It actually reminds me of primary school when all I wanted was sleek hair and all my hair wanted was to mince!

– I’m secretly worried that I will look back at my upcoming wedding day and think that it was not all I wanted or dreamed of. Of course, I know things will be perfect and beautiful, no matter what we don’t think of or have to get rid of so that we celebrate within our means.

– I’m not entirely sure of my hair type and I am not sure that I want to know. I think I’m a 3 something though. Given my personality, I don’t think it’s a good idea for me to sweat the small stuff when it comes to maintaining healthy hair. Although I am benefiting richly from all the information out there, I think that hair typing and other bits and bobs within our natural circles, break us down instead of building us up.

– I want to own a coffee shop and tea parlour one day. A friend asked her followers to share their travel goals for the year, and after doing so I felt so inspired and positive. Although people say you shouldn’t share your deepest dreams with everyone, I’m taking a small step of faith by mentioning it in this segment.

4 products or activities you can’t live without

– I’m not sure if you’re talking about hair products and activities, so I will take my chances here and say that I can’t live without spending time with God, and praying. I need to do more of this in the new year and I’m really thankful for how the Lord has carried me so far.

Now for the products:

– Afrobotanics Conditioning Moisturiser – This is my go-to styling product which you can use to detangle and style your hair after washing out your regular conditioner.

– Silk Bonnet – I only got one recently from Silk Helmet Lady after searching high and low (Clicks has them) for one which fit over my head and did not squash my hair. It’s amazing! My curls have a bit of longevity when I use the bonnet at bedtime. I find that it decreases knotting and keeps my curls defined and soft.

– A shower – bending over a basin is for the birds! Though I like to see that I’m doing a proper job of clarifying my hair with shampoo or ACV {the dirty water collecting in the basin is usually a good marker}, detangling or co-washing in the shower is so convenient. Since water restrictions are being implemented now curlies, I would recommend detangling your hair before your shower and using your shower time to wash/rinse your hair so you don’t spend 30 – 40 mins in there. But like I said, showers are great. We’re going to be hunting for our first apartment soon and it’s a requirement that we have a shower in the bathroom. Hehe.

3 Tips for other curly girls

– Do you! Everyone’s hair is different, even if it looks or feels the same. There’s no telling how your hair will respond to someone else’s routine, so create your own and be open to the fact that what is recommended to you by another curly girl, may not work for you, and that’s okay.

– Keep your routine simple. I love my hair. But there are weeks when I really don’t feel like washing or styling my mane. Try to combine steps and refrain from using all your products in one wash.

– Towards the end of last year, I ran out of styling products. My hair was dry and hated me for it. I often say that I don’t have the finances to lead an exorbitant haircare regime. If you follow my first and second tip, it should be easier to budget for the things you really need. And yes girl, for the life of your hair, you will have to part with some money for the essentials. Save yourself the crispy ends and accept that it’s needed just like your other toiletries.

2 misconceptions about curly hair

– Earlier I said that I try not to be strict on hair typing. One of the reasons I do so is because of the hierarchy it creates. I’ve seen quite a few of my fellow naturals comment that those of us with a looser curl pattern have it easy – almost insinuating that the only struggle, is a kinky struggle. Honey, my hair breaks, it shrinks, it does exactly what it wants to even if I manipulate it Monday through Sunday. We’ve all got our issues, there should be no rank.

– As a curly girl, one of the common questions I get is”

HOW DO YOU GET YOUR HAIR LIKE THAT?

Babies, let’s please just respond and say,

IT GROWS THIS WAY.

– When your hair is in its natural state, it grows the way it was fashioned especially for you. Even though I do twists outs, knot outs, braid outs, roller sets and other things to create different hairstyles, it must be said that we can’t make our hair do anything if we’re interested in sporting our natural crown. As curlies, we need to educate others about the idea of healthy hair and give them a better image of what hair can be prior to or without chemical products. As curlies, we need to understand and love OUR hair so that we don’t try to emulate another curly girl so much so that we think our hair is like hers even when it’s not. That’s when we start using the wrong products, and achieving less with our hair than we could if we just stick to our natural thread.

Everyday hacks part two

Last month I did my first few everyday hacks which I dubbed #ellabellatips I wanted a place to share quick tips I came across or knew of so I took to instagram to post it. I then realised that I should do a monthly round up,for those who don’t follow me on instagram (you should though, just saying) so here we are with my second instalment 🙂

Want to get healthy veggie based muffins into your toddler?
If you are not completely against sugar, why not lightly (super light – soggy muffins are not on) brush the top with water and dip in sprinkles or even coloured coconut which I showed you guys how to make here

Need a quick on the go snack?

Mix a small tub of yogurt with half a tub of milk (same tub) instant drinking yogurt 🙂 yum yum – Full cream yogurt works the best.

Need a “keep busy craft” in a hurry?

Cut up some drinking straws to make easy beads then pair with some pipe cleaners

Want some blue (or any other colour juice)?
Just put the smallest drop of food colouring into apple juice to get your desired colour
Like this blue “Frozen Juice”
Looking for a healthy snack to beat the heat?

Pop your yogurt in the freezer when you get to work or just first thing in the morning at home and by lunch time you have inexpensive frozen yogurt!!!

I am always looking for hacks to share so please tag me @justellabella or #ellabellatips on any tips you would like me to share on my monthly round up 🙂

Tips on choosing a daycare that works for your family.

Yesterday I noticed an ad in the paper with a ton of daycare facilities calling for kiddies to join the class of 2016  (and here I thought back-to-school season was over) this reminded me how stressful it is to find a place you are comfortable with especially with all the options out there (I literally went from school to school in my area before settling on one) Everyone has different views on how to choose so I decided to ask a few of my friends how they chose and hopefully help parents who are searching, refine their categories 🙂
Aidan has been at his daycare centre since just after he turned one and I love the place…
Everyone has a different set of criteria for choosing a daycare for their child. For me, apart from safety and proximity, I wanted diversity.
I wanted him to interact with people from different racial, cultural and religious backgrounds and hopefully make him aware of the beauty of differences. (Seems obvious, but we live in a small town and although our friends are pretty diverse, I needed it to be part of his everyday)
The area I grew up in as a child was very, lets say, one dimensional and I didn’t really like how the smallest difference was frowned upon. I didn’t want that for him, I didn’t want  him to be shocked that someone looked different to him or had different beliefs so wanted him to be integrated from a young age – Because although this is South Africa in 2016, people can still  be very closed minded.

It worked out amazing, like I mentioned yesterday his teachers are different races and religions and his classmates look like a tiny UN meeting – You know like the real world.
That was what I wanted,  I also went searching for a “vibe” some place my heart was okay with because I’m a hippie like that.
That was my criteria…here is what some moms I know (whose kids go to different play schools) had to say, hopefully some of this will help you find a loving home away from home for your littlies.
Yongama’s mommy Vuyo looked for
–         Proximity to work and home and whether traffic would be an issue with drop off and pick up
–        Cleanliness – especially bathrooms
–          And do the teachers look happy
(Loved the last point, because if someone loves what they do it shows)
Gabriel and India’s mommy Adele looked at
–        Operating hours
–        The layout of the facility
–        How the teachers interact with parents and children
(I would hate to leave my child at a place where I did not have a good relationship with the teacher)

Lili’s  mommy Busi  wanted
–        A beautiful and safe play ground
–        Quality food and emphasis on nutrition
(Good point as Aidan eats much better with teacher Linda than with me, much)
Blake and Riley’s mommy Robyn checked on
–         Age and developmentally appropriate activities
(she’s a teacher can you tell)
–        Safety
–        Gut instinct when checking out the place

What was most important to you?

Since we last chatted…

This weekend taught me that I’m really not happy with my current size! Photos can be so hurtful I swear!!!
But I realised I’m actually looking a little better than previous hurtful photos so I feel energised by that and I’m very ready to take on the “bring back the fitness” challenge.
I also realised how lucky I was to find Aidan’s school…it’s not everyday that you will find a dedicated principal dressed up like  Tinkerbelle. His school (which I initially chose because it is so diverse and I wanted him to understand that people were different – his teachers are Christian, Islamic and Rastafarian and his classmates come from every creed and culture) has proven to be such a blessing! They are always going the extra mile and showing my boy such love.
It also came to light that Aidan is loved by his classmates and he loves them right back. A fellow parent and I had our hands full trying to separate him and a friend who decided to “fight going home” by hugging each other so tight we couldn’t separate them!
This weekend I realised that Caleb is not a “baby” anymore, he is so ready to “play with the big kids” that we have to keep an eye on him CONSTANTLY. He is such a bonus in our lives. Full of joy and laughter and the bond the two boys have is such an amazing thing to see.

Here are some pics from our weekend:

Caleb feeling like a big boy on his push bike
Aidan learn’t to ride his bike this weekend, So proud!
Taught Aidan how to play LineUPfour and he proceeded to beat me – the shame!
Aidan’s school had a Disney/super heroes themed big walk so I decided to paint t-shirts for Rob and I
This was before Rob got too sick to join us
Super fun at the big walk…do note me and my sister in our capes
Kirsten and Taylor came out to support Aidan on his walk – he got so naggy I ended up walking with him while he waited with my mom at the start – I HAVE NO WORDS
And then half way through the day he got into the spirit of things
and then wouldn’t leave
My boytjies
He couldn’t believe his luck
After the big walk we all headed over to my cousin’s place for a swim
Taylor’s fearlessness scares me half to death!!!
Oh how we love the water

Chat soon peeps 🙂
am I too old to make peeps work?

Party with Finn

So after featuring my nieces birthday party HERE I remembered that I am besotted with kid’s birthday party decor. Honestly people I LOVE IT!!! So I asked around if people would be willing to share their party pics and got a great response. SO YES!!! Def a new series on the blog 🙂 Please be in touch if you are willing to let us spy on your party 🙂

My first featured party is that of the gorgeous little Finn.
Jill who you might remember from the WAHM feature Jill’s Stuff , shared her youngest son’s (she has two curly haired cherubs one with dark hair and one with blonde, both with too much cute) party pics with us and answered a few questions.

1.       Name and age of birthday boy
This was Finn’s 1st birthday party

2.       How did you decide on theme?
We chose the name Finn from one of our favourite animated series on Cartoon network, Adventure Time. It also helps that Finn means blonde haired warrior and that he happens to be blonde! So naturally his 1st birthday theme would be adventure time.

3.       DIY or shop bought?
Everything had to be made as there was no adventure time party supplies available in stores or online. I bought a printable package on etsy and had everything printed and then assembled with the help of my mom. Our fingers were sore from from all the cutting and pasting! I also found really cute plastic containers at mambos.

4.       Any behind the scenes blunders?
None really, we had an early party 10am as my boys have nap times around 1pm, so the only real blunder was that it was raining in the morning when the jumping castle and soft play area was delivered, but it cleared up in an hour.

5.       What was best part of the day?
Having all our family and friends together to celebrate our Finny’s birthday. He had so much fun and loved all the attention.
