This question goes out to South Africans…What does Youth day mean to you?
Officially (according to the history books: Youth Day on 16 June in South Africa commemorates the start of the Soweto riots of 1976, initially sparked by a government edict that all instruction in black schools would be held in Afrikaans. The iconic picture of Hector Pieterson, a black schoolchild shot by the police, brought home to many people within and outside South Africa the brutalities of the Apartheid regime. )
But what does it mean to you as a person?
Apart from being a public holiday and the lucky ones being allowed to sleep all we want and attend commemorative events, the day is pretty significant, it shows that as the youth you don't have to wait for the future to make a difference. I'm not saying do anything dangerous or get yourself hurt but don't wait for things to happen to you fight for what you believe in like the old saying says: If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything.
Have a good day all
