Happy Birthday Mommy

Today is my mom’s birthday according to her she is 20 20 something, lol, she’s actually still pretty young and (annoying as this may be) still in great shape.
We didn’t always get along too great, but these days she is one of my best friends because time(age) has taught me that while I thought we had nothing in common the opposite is true.
In a lot of ways I am the part of her she tries to hide, emotional and often dramatic, I am the dreamer who carries her heart on her sleeve and trusts way too easily. She is the head strong no nonsense, put your trust in yourself type who never does anything to please others, help others yes!,  please others? not so much.
But with time I realised I’m actually a lot like her always taking charge and valuing my independance and like me my mom has a big creative side to her.
She called me a high maintenance child/teenager and I called her unsympathetic, but things have changed and I like to believe the dreamer in me has helped her learn to dream again, while she taught me to never apologise for who I am (still learning) , to rely on myself, but never take people for granted always treating others how I want to be treated.
She is also one of the funniest people I know.

– Happy Birthday mom, thanks for everything from walking me to school before your shift when I was little to waking up early to help me revise for exams and going out of your way for me no matter what.
Thanks for mothering without smothering and for being you.

LOVE YOU ALWAYS

Uptown girl or down town chick

So this morning I overslept, as in really overslept. Because I work “out of town” I usually take the train (regardless of people’s opinions, I like taking the train because; it’s cheap,I don’t have to face rush hour traffic, I have met amazing people and have I mentioned it’s super cheap) anyway missing the train means I am now updating my blog from a taxi blasting music from old school musicals, while I sit lodged between a construction worker and someone I assume to be a secretary (SA for you).
Walking to taxi rank made me realise that I like how random my life is and how I have lived two sides of a story.
Thinking about my life I have to say I love that I’ve lived in a small bachelor flat as a little girl, moved eight times to a point where I could pick my bedroom out of seven.
Went from watching my parents take on handy man jobs to make ends meet (my mom would sew my dad would fix things) to helping my dad set up his own business.
I love how I know how it feels to be searching the house for change to buy bread, but have also been lucky enough to have eaten at many fancy restuarants and know that pine nuts and rocket are some of my favourite salad ingredients.
I love how I know how it feels to be thankful for school uniform because I had nothing nice to wear any way and I like how it’s taught me the value of looking good without me forgetting that the outside of someone is nothing more than a mask.
I love how I’ve played in the same roads others see as dangerous and have gone on to attend fashion shows around SA and even Brazil.
I love how my husband and I know the worry behind having to choose which bill to skip and how to stretch 100 bucks over a month, but we also know the joy of having no fears of debtors phoning you and getting to decide if we want sushi or steak for supper.
Most of all I love how I have never wanted for anything, how my parents would do anything for my siblings and I and taught me the pleasure in giving. Their lives have set the example that working hard you can have your dream.
Thanx mom and dad and thanx Rob for working towards “the dream” with me.
-have a great day guys, just remember “be careful of the toes you step on today, because they might be attached to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow) 😉

I’m such a lucky girl

YOU ALL ROCK!!!

The siblings

I was watching Conviction (a scary true story) Hillary Swank’s character pulls out all the stops including becoming a lawyer to prove her brothers innocence in a murder trial.
It got me thinking about my own siblings my 21y old brother, Allister, everyone calls him Ally and my 17y old sister,Anthea, who goes by Thea. (still havent figured out if I’d become a lawyer for them, even if I can get Jessica Alba to play me in the story of my life)
We have always been at 3 different stages of our lives; I’m hanging out with friends, Ally’s playing in the garden and Thea is still learning to walk. I’m finishing high school, Ally is starting and Thea is midway thru primary school.
So with the age difference we have not always been the type that hang out except if its mandatory like a family trip or getting locked in a room till we stop fighting (my dad once even tied my brother’s hand to mine to get us to stop bickering).
But we are older now and yes we still get into tifs, like I get annoyed when they wanna play bank and I have to play the roll of the atm, also because I’m out of the house the two of them have become very close so I sometimes feel left out.
On the other hand my sister gets annoyed because my brother would like to keep her locked in a room with colouring pencils, “she’s little she can’t be dating and partying”, he says.
Point is we are very different, they are confident socialites and I’m the shy book worm, over time we have evened out a bit, I go out more and they are more serious about their futures, more and more, we dont mind hanging out, they come to me for advice and I’ve done the same and no matter how different we are we are there for each other NO MATTER WHAT…
LOVE YOU GUYS!

From before

So I got my phone up and running long enough to share these pictures 🙂 I found them in a box when I was “requested” to “get rid of my junk”.

This is me waiting to go to my matric dance, I had my hair cut that day and it was still sooo much, hehe.
I really miss being that skinny and having my hair that length, but funny enough I don’t miss being that girl. Way too scared of my shadow and people, I still kinda am, but hide it wayyyyy better 😉
This is my late gran, Annie Douglas, she was a real inspiration in the original “girl power” sense, single mom with a host of hobbies and always helping people. She also taught me about fashion (you can see by funky shoes) she believed if you look good, you feel good, and if you feel good you do good. She was always telling my cousins and I, “I want my girls to look smart”

This cutey is my husband around 6-years-old. He knows I put it up and although he is not the biggest fan of the idea, he mostly just lets me get on with things, hehe.

This is my dad,Allan, when he was a teenager. I’m told he was a real charmer and has always been “the leader of the pack” some of his friends still call him “Boss”.  Like my gran he always puts others first, weird to see him like this.

This is my dad these days (a year or so ago) with my mom,Angie, the two are still crazy inlove after all these years and my mom is one of the strongest/craziest/funniest people I know. She wears uggs with summer dresses and calls everyone girla because she can hardly ever remember their names.
My little sister,Anthea, when she was still little, she is now 17 and certainly does not look like this, hehe. We both used to model back then. Now she dresses like a boy and beats them at their own games. She annoys the living daylights out of me!!! but I love her to bits.
